The best bathing beach on Faial
Oct 2019
Situated about 3 km north of the capital Horta, this long beach of black volcanic sand is the safest and most sheltered bathing beach on Faial island. There are a couple of bars and restuarants and a large park behind it, showers, public toilets and a quayside from which you can dive into the warm clear water. I swam in October and the water temperature was still a pleasant 22C

A Beautiful Island
Sep 2019
There are several public beaches on Faial Island and all are beautiful. Since the weather is rather mild there are plenty of days to visit the beach and swim or relax on the sand.

Praia do Almoxarife Campsite
Aug 2019
There are many charming campsites in the Azores. This is not one of them. There's nothing wrong with it, its just very functional. Also, while we were there the prevailing wind direction meant that it was very exposed (wind and rain) and it also had 2 large groups of teenagers staying. The other campsite at Varadouro was far nicer.

We just went for the scenery, not for sunbathing neither swimming. But it is a beautiful bay and have a nice restaurant.

Black sand beach with a stunning view of Pico Mountain
May 2019 • Couples
This is a popular beach (though deserted when we visited it on a sunny day in mid-May!), not far from Faial's main town, Horta. The best feature has to be the stunning views of Pico Mountain.

Wonderful black sandy beach
Aug 2018 • Solo
Don’t miss this spot! Almoxarife beach is a pure spot not to be missed! It is also a surf beach with some nice cafes and restaurants with authentic local cuisine ... also a camp area hosted by the city hall with clean showers and bathrooms and even a snack and barbecues to cook your own meals... have fun!

A Popular Black Sand Beach
Oct 2018 • Couples
Easy to reach and close to Horta, this is a very nice place to visit for a few hours - in season. When we were there in October it was practically vacant. Weather is certainly a key factor for a day of family fun at the beach. There is lovely picnic area as well. It's certainly worth a stop and a walk about.

Spectacular beach
Jul 2018 • Couples
This beach with black sand is just incredible. We went there on a really windy day, with some extremely large waves kicking in. Good thing the life guards where on duty.

Black Sand... if it's there
Aug 2018 • Friends
The sand here can come and go! Fortunately both times I have visited the sand has been present, but locals say it can disappear overnight. But whatever, it is a lovely location with three good restaurants and a cafe / bar. The area also has a camp site. It is beautiful.

Make a day of it
Aug 2018 • Family
Almoxarife is a great place to spend the day. There is a kids playground behind the beach and in the shadow of the ancient and magnificent church. The beach has life guards so it is safe for all the family; sand and water are as clean as a you can imagine; there is plenty of decent snorkelling; there are showers in the middle of the beach to rinse off before going to one of the several (4 I think) excellent cafes/bars/restaurants. It costs 7 Euros from the centre of Horta to the Praia do Almoxarife, which is significantly cheaper than hiring a car, and well worth the money. Oh, and in front of you is the spectacular Pico and, to the left, the island of Sao Jorges.
