It's a circular trail, not easy, specially if foggy or windy.
With a clear sky it is real beautiful.

Nice raod to the top with good views over the Pico. Impressive sight when you are on top. We started the trail which is not so easy.

We did the 360 degree crater rim hike in foggy and stormy weather. Pretty narrow path at times, views of the caldeira and the island are unbelievable. The 8 km hike can easily be done in 2 hours. Our family liked it a lot - and next time we want to descend into the crater!

When the weather is nice, I mean no cloud and no mist this is a must go spot on Faial Island! Book a trip with a guide, as per example “Our Island” tour as you can’t go on your own for safety reasons... the trip and sight are amazing! Enjoy

Just the drive up to this amazing lookout is worth the trip. Winding roads through the most beautiful forrested areas in Faial. Take it slow. Wind down the window. Enjoy the journey. As for the Caldeira. Wow!!! You enter the viewpoint either by going up the stairs, or by tunnel. Pick the tunnel. Breathtaking as it opens up before you. Do not leave Faial without visiting this amazing spot.

An easy to walk Trail which takes ca. 2,5 hours. We recommend to first walk clockwise around the caldeira as you can just have to get up to the antennas first and then can enjoy the walk downwards without too many height-meters.

Hi,
We returned few weeks ago from the amazing trip in the Azores.

We did not rent a car in Faial, so we took a taxi to the Caldeira with a great driver named Filipe Marques (962-794-220).
He is a skilled and friendly driver, and gave us a lot of information on the way there. Super recommended !!
(it was about ~20 Euro each direction)

We took the round hike around it - it takes about 3 hours with few short stops of several minutes each. The trail is not challenging or steep (some small uphills and down hills) but it requires to be in basic shape as it is a long hike.
Each point around the rim is amazing and the view from different locations is somewhat different, so it is worth making the whole round trip.

The view was Amazing !! We were speechless. Not to be missed.
The weather in Septembar was clear at that day, and a fog appeared there every once in a while and was gone few minutes later.

The trail starts in a well defined starting point near a car parking, and ends exactly in the same place. (see pictures)

during summer time you can go with a short sleeved shirt, but some of the other hikers preferred wearing an additional layer on top.

You could meet other people along the trail, so it feels safe to travel even alone, and surely with few friends or with a family.

The same driver came back to take us from the same point, at the time we agreed on. so this is really a stunning place you can visit even if you did not rent a car.

Can't walk the whole trail? You can also reach the starting point by a car and take a look from a lovely viewpoint just there. (see the pictures) . you can also start walking up the trail and then go back the same way, in order to have a shorter hike of 30-60 minutes or even less.

Enjoy !!
