A rock in the sea with lots of seabirds, at least when I visited in June. Difficult to spot them, because they are high up on the rock.
A nice photo stop on your way to Varadouro swimming pool or Capelinhos Volcano.

As part of the Natural Park system of Faial, this huge outcropping of rock is an important nesting area for protected migratory birds, particularly the little Cory Shearwater that comes here to hatch its eggs between March and October. When we arrived in mid November, the wide variety of nesting birds had left but the landscape views and short trails around the property were well worth the visit. The road in from the highway, although well marked, is quite rough and about 1km long. A nice parking area greets you at the start of a well groomed walkway to see a close-up of the giant rock, a 'hardened lava cork', as they describe it. Washrooms, log seats and walker friendly trails made this an enjoyable stop. The best time to see the morrow is when the birds are here of course (bring your binoculars), but the area is interesting at any time of the year. In addition to efforts to protect bird species you will also see some indigenous plants that are being protected, such as the Myosotis maritima (Forget-me-not) plant. Helpful information signs provide guidance once you arrive.

We first visited this protected geological wonder 3 years ago and were so impressed we made a return visit. The only change is that you must now walk the relatively short distance from the parking area to the natural park attraction. The endangered Cory’s Shearwater birds, along with several other species, make their seasonal home here among the cliffs. You will also find some indigenous plants, unique to the Azores. Apart from the birds, this massive rock reaches for the skies and a close up perspective provides fantastic photo opportunities of the coastline and the tranquil bay located directly beside the Morro. While there, you might enjoy the wonderful trail opposite the parking area that goes up the coast aways. Don't be deterred by the warning signs to avoid the rodents (see pic). We saw the burrows but not a creature in sight.

I wouldn't go there on purpose, since i don't think it's so special. You can take the walking trail to avoid stepping on the plants.

A nice stop here to see the "castle" itself which is a shelter for the sea birds to reproduce. Our guide Suzanna on azores exp. was a local girl with great knowledge of the island and she showed us a little bird in one of the caves which we could actually not be able to find out by ourselves.
Walking along the path for a little while and you'll be faced with a nice view of Pico.

The weather was great, and the spot was fabulous... to relax, take in nature, have a pic-nic, a hike or whatever your heart desires... it´s a really pleasant spot to spend some time in or just stop by and visit.

Castelo Branco so names because from a distance (from the sea) it looks like a castle!
Great pic in area, great for viewing various birds and coastline. However if plan to walk the path that is constantly eroded by the sea on both sides, has no specific track, or guards - then do it knowing there are risks! Still work a visit even if you don't walk on to the rock it's self.

We visited this lovely rugged coastal area in order to view Cory's Shearwaters. Although the visibility wasn't great we managed to see 1,000+. If you wish to do the same (or look for whales / dolphins) then you will need your own binoculars / telescope as there isn't a visitors' centre or general use equipment available.
There is parking for a small number of cars (including a dedicated spot for those with mobility problems and there's an excellent path to the main viewing area).
We could have easily spent a few hours here and perhaps done the looped walk to the village of Lombega. However, we had limited time and unless you're keen on nature / walking it may be a quick photo stop only.

Interesting piece of landscape, with great views down to the ocean. There is a little trail and a viewpoint with an information placard. Perfect for a picnic!

This peninsula is located near the airport and the car can get there very close. It doesn't seem visitable but the image is quite pretty.
