Silves is worth a trip and you should definitely take a little more time than just one day. There is more to discover than 'just' the castle (which is of course also worth seeing).
The best place to park your car is in one of the parking lots on the outskirts of town and then explore the town on foot. There are beautiful squares and small cobblestone streets with nice restaurants and shops. We also liked the many painted distribution boxes.

Aside from the obvious castle visit and fascinating central museum (both worth a visit) the greater Silves area is full of interesting hikes. In the valley north there are standing stones, graves carved into the rock and ancient csrnes. It's an absolutely beautiful area, and of course after a day having adventures you can have a dinner or a drink in one of the many cafes that spring up all over town.
I recommend the sushi place down by the main town square, basic decor but the food is amazing!

A beautiful little town and well worth a stroll around to absorb the quintessential Portuguese feel of the place.

The big advantage of Silves is, that it is not on the beach, so the city isn't overrun with sun and pleasure seekers, in need of hotels, cafés and souvenir shops. Silves is therefore a charming old town, retaining much of the original structure. Uphill the Castle, the Cathedral and other churches can be visited; downhill at the river, charming pedestrianized streets can be explored. Local cafés and restaurants are there to combat hunger and thirst for a modest fee. At the river a bridge from Roman times can be admired. Ample free parking is available on a large car park at the N124 road, where the fast food restaurant Burger Ranch is. It is opposite the football grounds of Silves. The center of lower Silves is only steps away from this parking lot. To visit higher Silves on the hill I recommend doing this by car and find a parking space somewhere in the (narrow cobblestone) streets. It can be done. A visit to Silves is worth the journey; be prepared to be in Silves the best part of the day.

Part of a coach trip - primarily to see the old Moorish capital of the Algarve, but was surprised how 'quaint' this place was. Walk up from the river (it's steep!) towards the Church and the Castle - did I say it's STEEP....
Very nice village feel to this place... I loved the utility cabinets that had been painted, made the whole place much nicer... Lots of Stork's nesting everywhere, on Telegraph poles, on rooftops, all over the place!
Church was 'interesting', but a Church is a church so no surprises there, the Castle was way bigger than I thought it was going to be - didn't have too much time to go around the Castle so saw what I could before I had to go back to the coach pick up point.

We travelled on a bus number 4 from Portimao which took 35mins we had 3 1/2 hours which was enough time to see what we wanted to and have lunch. The bus was €6.70 each return.
From the bus stop walk right until you see some streets heading upwards take one of these and it leads you up to the castle, cathedral and the museum of archaeology, we got a free sample of wine from a little square as we had purchased the joint ticket for castle and museum. Some cafes and restaurants to chose from for lunch or drink. Don't get the train the station is no where near Silves! If you are on the bus get off after you have crossed the bridge into Silves.

Large free carpark across from the football ground onthe main road round the town. The town is nice and friendly, though the walk up to the castle and cathedral is very steep in places and the cobbles can be slippery - keep to the grey ones where possible. Can be busy if you hit the time and day when tour buses hit the town.

Worth a bus visit on our weekly ticket but not a number one destination if you have only a few days in the Algarve. Fine views from the top of the town of the fort and surrounding area but therefore on the hilly side although you could spend your time alongside the river and nearby shops and market.Storks all around the town were amazing as they flew around to and from their nests.

Silves was a fun place to hike around with a mostly intact historical Fort that is interesting to visit. There are several little cafes, some with live music, that offer tapas, wine, & good local food.
