- Vincent RMontreal, Canada58 contributionsOld but worth the tripWe went to the thermal baths and spent about 1.5 hours there. The main pool is interesting. Water temperature was ideal. The water jets were different than what I've seen before but efficient. Everyone needs to wear a cap (supplied), a bit weird I find. The whole design is not intuitive and has no proper signage or instructions. Safety is a problem as I slipped and almost fell on my back as I exited the 'surprise' shower. So be careful. The place is in dire need of renovations. The steam room was out of order and the sauna was occupied, quite small it seems. It was clean enough even though everything looked old.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 1, 2023
- Paul ESt. Catharines, Canada317 contributionsA nice little town and areaCaldas is a quaint little town with unusual rock formations right besides the roadside parking. It has beautiful little boutiques of crafts. The restaurants are a bit pricy knowing it is the tourists that will be willing to pay for it. The walk around the water source is very peaceful. Monchique is also a very nice town to visit. The restaurants are very good and not overpriced. We enjoyed our visit.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 30, 2023
- Louise S17 contributionsCaldas du Monchique worth a visitSo charming and traditional. Small village in the heart of Monchique mountains. I believe this is the exit point of the famous drinking waters. We visited at the end of Aug so the waters weren’t exactly flowing as it hasn’t rained for months. But well worth a visit anyway. Beautiful huge boulders and stone picnic tables. Huge trees in a forest that tranquil setting. We loved our visit. Pretty little square in the middle of the village to stop and have a drink.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 23, 2024

We were looking forward to a few hours here having read about it in the guidebook.
The place was deserted, not in a quiet relaxing way but in an eerie abandoned way.
Only one restaurant was open and it was too expensive for a family, more a fine dining venue. We wandered in to the hotel to see if they had a restaurant and again it was derelict feeling, no water in the pools, scruffy around the edges. We did wonder if it had been closed down for a couple of years and mid renovation (which would explain a lot) but having read the reviews on here since, apparently not. Most bizarre. Shame as it looked like it would be a nice after lunch stroll had we found anywhere open.

We travelled here from Lagos and it was quite underwhelming. After a 45 minute car journey we found a rock that trickled some water, put our hand in it and was done. I can imagine it’s nice if you are staying here but not worth a car journey to visit.

But if you imagine beautiful hot thermes with a lot of services, this is not your place, especially in winter. Essential, nice, kind people. Wonderful surroundings. Prices around 50/60 euros, depending on the choice of your treatment.

My wife and I drove there on our way to Monchique to check the place with a view on spending a few days there. We decided not to book the resort. The resort is pretty but the use of the spa is expensive. There is a plant right next door which ruin the scenery. However, the drive from Albufeira to Monchique, through the mountains was the highlight of the day.

This place is quite nice, but not a top location. It looks well equiped for tourists. The garden with the river is nice. I needed more background information probably to really take it in. The spa was closed due to COVID-19. Behind the spa there is indeed some lukewarm water pouring out of the rocks / wall.

This comment is related to the Spa. It was supposed to be closed for renovation works at the end of last year. It was necessary, the requirements in terms of cleanliness were no longer met. Therefore we were expecting to go into a renovated Spa , but the works have not been undertaken, it’s still in a desolate state. I’m even surprised that this Spa is authorised to operate in these poor cleanliness and hygienic conditions. Until the renovation works are not launched, it’s not a place to go.

Caldas de Monchique is a nice hiking spot in the hills, with mineral and thermal waters. Still, there are visible remains of the wildfire, reminding us to care for nature and what we have. If you are close take soem time and visit this beautiful place.

We were amazed at this out of the way hotel. It is set in a beautiful little valley with breathtaking scenery, an outdoor pool and spa services that include a lovely mineral pool. Our room was exquisite, very well appointed. We will definitely stay again should we return to Southern Portugal!

Caldas de Monchique is situated half way up towards Monchique the Algarve's only mountain, dating back to pre Roman and became popular for the springs healing powers. During the summer months you will find the waterfall dried up. The is a large centre that regularly holds long craft fairs and well worth a visit. There are picnic table doted about and made of stone so a cushion might be handy to take with you. There are come good cafes and a couple of restaurants were I would recommend having lunch if heading up towards Monchique as when you get to the top the square only really has cafe's that offer a snack and drink.

Seriously considering cancelling holiday due to current ongoing wildfires. Advice please. Has anyone else been in same situation?
Written July 22, 2019
Unfortunately fires can break out at any time. Not so many trees here as it is more of a peak.

Family holiday booked for August (4 weeks away) just caught up on news of last years wildfires. Feeling anxious, should we consider cancelling? Honest advice please. Thank you in advance

We were in Caldas de Monchique a few weeks ago. We didn't see any evidence of fire damage to Caldas or the surrounding area. We drove in and out in 2 different directions and noticed nothing. Walked around Caldas and up to the spring, all was beautiful! It's a fabulous area, we will return. Have a great holiday!

no, la città è in una piccola valle, quindi non puoi vedere il mare

We walked a little way from Caldes alongside a lavada. Not sure how far the trail goes. Worth trying to find a map?
