The castle is situated on the top of a hill (aren't most castles?) in a sleepy very pleasant quiet village in the hinterland of the Algarve. It's one of the many villages and towns in the hinterland to lose yourself and escape the crowds on the beaches.
The remains or ruins of the castle, that date back to the 12th century, are limited as it took a pounding from the Christians when they took it back from the Moors. There are a couple of towers of rammed earth rather than solid stone and some traces of the walls that can be easily accessed and are free. There is also a small museum that is sited over some excavated ruins of dwellings that were within the walls of the castle but don't worry, they are fully visible as most of the floor of the museum is made of toughened glass.
One interesting fact I found out about the castle was, in it's hey day, it was painted white that mimicked large limestone ashlars so, from a distance, it looked like it was made very solidly with large stone blocks.

The castle is well worth a visit, the vies from the battlements are very good and there is art if acts of what they have found dating back to the medieval times. The town of Silves is very pretty with narrow streets leading down from the castle with plenty of cafe and restaurants To choose from . Allow a good 1/2 day or more , also by the river is the medieval bridge.
Top tip at the castle look out for the entrance fee if you are 65 and over it’s a reduced entrance fee.

Mainly ruins which can be seen from outside and a rather pleasant stroll round the top of hill where castle stood to see views of the luscious growth below. A couple of restored towers can also be seen.

A castle and museum which are delightful to visit - not big enough to bore anyone but it gives one an appreciation of the castle that was built on this hill over a thousand years ago. Check the timetable for opening as they do close for an hour for lunch. They have excellent books on the history of the place.

It's a lovely place to drive to with lots of Bars a restaurants to choose from and the castle is an old roman ruin to walk round it's floor lit pathways with panaramic views, see the houses built into the castle walls and some even out of the old castle stone they borrowed! A lovey place seeing the other side of how the Algarvians live also they have festivals up there and special events ,a great visit.

We really enjoyed our visit to the castle and we were there about 1.5 hours. We walked around the top which had views out over the whole area and then had a sit down and a drink, at the cafe, which had Wifi so we could recharge for the rest of our sightseeing.

We enjoyed the town and castle although there is not much left of the castle. The museum was interesting with the glass floor over the excavations. The guide could not speak English but we managed to converse in French !

Don't expect to much from the castle as you will mainly see some old walls. But the view from the top is nice and compensates you for the effort of the way-up.

After a pleasant but long drive through the hill to Salir we were looking forward to seeing the castle then some refreshments ......
There is nothing left of the castle except a small modern building displaying some rubble and oldish bowls. The one small piece of wall that is left isn’t original as it has been patched/ repaired over the years . Why , I don’t know because there is very little left . The attendant can only speak French so don’t have any questions.
No cafe to be seen anywhere .

There is not much left of the castle but a walk along the walls will allow you to admire an impressive view and to enjoy the quiet atmosphere of this little gem hidden in the middle of Algarve.
