- PAdixieSaskatoon, Canada127 contributionsWe went to the market on a tour on Saturday morning. It is fabulous and a must see if you have the time. It is huge with seafood, fresh produce, baking, honey, and hand made crafts. We stopped for lunch at a little restaurant and had incredible pizza and beer for a very reasonable price. I would recommend it especially if you are a person that enjoys market shopping, you won't be disappointed.Visited February 2025Traveled with familyWritten February 15, 2025
- Laura BHamilton, United Kingdom130 contributionsThe Saturday market in Loule is fabulous. The selection and variety of fish, fruit and vegetables is the best we have seen. There are lots of stalls inside and outside the market including craft and local produce. We found a lovely small cafe in the old convent building (the one with the huge tree in the middle of the courtyard) where the coffee and custard tarts were fabulous and cheap. The surrounding shops had a great selection of things to buy including local pottery, ceramics, jewellery and palm woven products. Would highly recommend a visit here on a Saturday ( but go early as some of the shops were starting to close by 1pm). For information we went to Loule from Albufeira by Uber and it cost 15 euros each way, taking 25 minutes.Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 19, 2024
- linaChelmsford, United Kingdom100 contributionsWe had a wonderful tapas lunch here at the Sabores da Terra. Freshly grilled chicken piri piri, entrecôte, a tomato salad and the Parma ham board and chips. It was all absolutely delicious. Waiting time was 10m but we visited in low season. We originally passed by here on Sunday evening it was packed and they had live music playing. I would highly recommend it and we will definitely be back next time we’re in town.Visited November 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten November 5, 2024
- JanouvolcanToulouse, France252 contributionsNice food market on Saturday morning in very beautiful market halls and surrounding areas. Many locals come to do their shopping there. The stalls are colorful and full of products. A few shops inside for tourists with spices, dried fruits, tea and coffee.. where they don't hesitate to call on you, standing out from the rest of the shops.. Then get lost in the alleys of pretty quality craft shops and local exhibitors (pottery, honey, basketry, copperwork, wood) prices which are most often lower than in stores, get an idea of the prices before buying despite everything. Pretty little cafes or restaurants within a restricted area. To definitely do. Saturday market ends around 1:00 p.m.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 5, 2024
- ChrisTasr18 contributionsHighly recommend a day out to the market in Loule if you're nearby. The main marketplace building is very cool, there's loads of stalls in it and the streets around. When it was all winding down some llive music started up inside which was great fun while we finished the freshly prepared oysters and tuna sandwich. There's so many stalls of fresh fruit, veg, fish; local honey; plenty of crafts and more!Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 2, 2024
- Anoula126Bromley, United Kingdom435 contributionsBrilliant market, lots of different stalls, fresh produce People are really friendly, popular with locals, lots of cafes nearby serving delicious food Surrounding streets are full of shops selling, clothes, jewellery Lovely place to come and walk around for a dayVisited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 21, 2024
- Dirk RKetzin, Germany199 contributionsWe visited the market yesterday at around 10 a.m. All but two or three stalls were open. After a first look around, we had a leisurely second breakfast in one of the cafes near the market. We then went to the market to buy lunch and dinner. A tip: tuna from a large pieceVisited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 27, 2024

Another place dedicated to mass tourism in the Algarve. Yet described as a "genuine" market, where, so to speak, the "locals" would make their "market", it is quite the opposite: 3/4 of the stalls and their goods are intended for tourists, with signs in English of course! When compared with the covered markets in Spain, it is crying mediocrity. However (as usual in the Algarve), everything is expensive, very expensive even and prices border on a tourist scam.
On either side of the market, shops just as expensive (example: low-end T-shirt for...30 euros!) and unimaginative: windows and showcases of cork gadgets, hideous ceramics and reproduced in the chain.
This market is representative of the rest of the city where authenticity falls into disrepair (or has long since disappeared) while low cost gold prices abound.
I can't understand the appeal of the Algarve.

Went on the Saturday morning which is the local farmers market included. Outside loads of stalls with fresh fruit, veges, meat, cheese, honey, nuts, olives. Inside more stalls with some Gypsy type ones selling bags, then more local artisans with chilli sauces, marzipan sweets, fig bars, bread, cakes and at the very end the fish and seafood section.
If you’re planning to buy take some stuff bags to carry everything! Most stall owners speak English. I didn’t barter but if you wander around you’ll find some steaks selling same things for a couple Euro’s cheaper. Take cash!
Well worth the trip.

Nice food stalls but we made the mistake of having lunch at the tapas restaurant in the centre. Something da Terra. Waited 40 minutes for them to cook the food when the restaurant was empty and the piri piri chicken fot €9.50 with no sides was the size of half a sparrow. Absolutely no meat on it and most of it was red and bloody. We were starving after it. Not even one mouthful.

Of course it depends on what you are looking for when on holiday. My wife and I like to visit the towns around the resorts to get a feel for the real lives that are led and a trip to Loule on a Saturday provides that.
The main building is an ornate piece of architecture in its own right but in all the side roads leading off and down from the town square you will find stalls. The emphasis is very much on food so plenty of veg and fruit stalls plus meat, cheeses and fish. The side streets are also full of shops as well and these are non-tourist so very interesting.
Loule seems to be the epicentre of the local economy and certainly on a Saturday it is very busy as the growers of the area come into town to sell their produce. It does all start to pack-up after lunch so an early start is recommended. Buses do run out there but with taxis at 15-20 euro max that is a good option as well.

We had heard a lot about this market and while it’s a nice experience to wander around and see all the fresh produce, meat and seafood on offer, don’t buy anything unless you want to be ripped off. I sent my husband to get vine tomatoes for a recipe I wanted to make and a lady charged him €15 for 500g! Exorbitant prices! I would have refused, but he bought them anyway because he knew I wanted it for a recipe. We also bought dourada (sea bream), only to find out later that the price per KG was DOUBLE the price of the local supermarket (Continente). Perhaps you’re supposed to barter or they just see a tourist a mile off and charge what they want. Go for the experience and that’s it.

We had been told that the Saturday Market at Loulé was the best in Algarve, and we got there in mid morning when the market was in full swing. The hall is huge with all the stands and stuff one would expect, from trinkets and cakes to fish and meat. It was busy and difficult to find a seat to have a drink and a rest, but once the custard pies and coffee was obtained, we sat inside the hall enjoying the scenery and busyness of the market. Shoppers were mostly local, but there were also a good number of foreign visitors like ourselves, even though this was not in the tourist season. Also outside there were stands offering artwork, embroidery and much more.

We wanted to eat oysters. The oysters arrived for another 20 minutes , the counter force tried not to break off its long fingernails when opened, each oyster contained splinters from the shell. The oysters were watery and tasteless. A complaint was rejected unkindly. Not recommended!
The market itself is well sorted and the goods seem fresh

We drove and found parking to be really difficult. You can park on streets where some charge and some don’t, these were all full when we visited which was mid week. After 20 mins driving around and using google we found a car park opposite a government building. It was short stay, there were 16 spaces available but it said it was full so we had to wait for someone to leave before we got a ticket to enter. There is another level but you have to drive round the opposite side to enter. I am glad we didn’t go on a Saturday. The market is a small typical market for locals, we bought some items and were pleased with the items. Saturday may have been better but I would have rather gone on the bus or private tour on the weekend so not to struggle parking. We tried to eat at a place in the market but were ignored by the staff so left.

Very beautiful white and red building in Moorish style which houses a pretty, very lively market, good atmosphere, frequented by locals and tourists. Very varied products, bakery, fish, fruits and vegetables but also a catering area in the middle of the hall. Very pleasant to walk there and buy local specialties: wines, honey, fig sweets, biscuits, olive oil etc...On Saturdays, there is also an open-air market on the square and in the small streets around the market.

A much better visit as we went on the bus instead of joining a conducted tour. Influenced by Moorish architecture, the market is a beautiful structure. The fish market is excellent on a Saturday and several upmarket eateries within. Good place to buy pretty local souvenirs.

Where is the bus stop for Quarteira?

Sorry...we drove...but I am sure that you will have not difficulty finding it. The bus station is nearby, as I recall. Check Google maps.

what is the bus times from albufeira i don't understand the timetable we would like as much time as possible in loule.
Written January 25, 2018
There isn't really a timetable as such. You will need to ask for an approximate time.

As you come into the centre of the town there is parking to the left, right and straight ahead off the roundabout. The right turn has lots of parking spaces on both side of the one way system and down side roads. parking to the left can be found at the bottom of the road but not as many parking spaces this way. Not haven driven straight across the roundabout I am unable to comment on the parking spaces but assume that like the side streets, there is also plenty of parking. Parking is pay & display metered in this area.
I would have a look on google earth/maps, it will give you a bit of an insight of the towns layout
