Sao Goncalo was a monk from the early 15th century who performed several miracles, including greatly increasing the number of fish in the area - which is one reason he's the patron saint of fishermen here (note other parts of Portugal have a different patron saint, Goncalo is special to Lagos.

The statue shows a rather commanding saint, arm raised out over the sea, on a high point next to the Praia da Batata. In my opinion it's one of the best (of many) statues of important figures in Lagos - Henry the Navigator looks passive and dull next to it (of course it's NOT next to it, which is fortunate for Henry. And the statue of Dom Sebastiao in Gil Eannes square - we won't even talk about that!

If you're heading to the beaches from the center, chances are you can't miss this, but do look for it. The area upon which it is set is pleasant as well, with a patterned floor of waves, even a fool-the-eye feeling that the floor is not flat - and the views are great - enjoy it, and Lagos, which I just love!

Breath taking view of the beach below with the statue of Sao Goncalo overlooking.

There is no shade, so don't expect to hang out long on a hot day. But it's got a great view and plenty of room to sit.

I stopped here on my way to the point. The cobble stone floor resembles most of the towns intricate design.

A somewhat imposing statue, beautifully sited overlooking, beach, cliffs, and town view. A few minutes stroll from town centre, it is well worth a stop, even a lingering beach stop.

The São Gonçalo de Lagos (1360-1422) statue holds a significant message regarding faith. Most crosses face outwards but the artist purposely had Jesus facing towards the subject. Fisherfolk knew storms as an occupational hazard and drew on their faith, by keeping their eyes on Jesus, to get them safely through the storm.

Came across this statue on leaving Lagos and following the water up to our hotel. There’s some great views over the beach and across to the walled city of Lagos!

The statue itself is only a statue, esp. when you have no idea about who he/she is. But this one lies on a beautiful coast, and you can have a perfect panoramic view there. Come to the beach to enjoy sunlight, and stand next to the statue to enjoy sunset.

Besides its local, historical background, there is nothing much special about this statue. The square where it stands offers a nice viewpoint on the old fort below and the Bay of Lagos. It is at a walking distance to the city walls and the old city.
