This beautiful and monumental arch replaces the old Arab gateway to the city of Faro. All visitors arriving in Faro from the sea, in medieval times, would reach the city through this entrance. Bishop Francisco Gomes de Avelar commissioned its renovation to Italian architect Francisco Xavier Fabri. The arch. inaugurated in 1812, is one of the finest examples of Italian neo-classical style in the Algarve region and in the whole Portugal. It leads to the old town and some remains of the original Moorish Walls of Faro and of the ancient Arab gateway are still seen on its far end. Storks' nest on its top complete scene. Unmissable!. Enjoy!

We were here for the Portuguese guitar demonstration, which we enjoyed very much. The visit also allows viewing of some historical items, including old maps of Faro. From the rooftop you can look around the old city in every direction. It is a chance to get up close if not personal to nesting storks. These are mostly resident rather than seasonal. They pay not attention traffic below or tourist almost alongside.

Old arch that is an entrance to the old town of Faro. Tourist Information office is next door, and worth a browse to pick up info about the city..

This was the first entrance to the old town of Faro that we came across. It can be found right next to the tourist information office. A beautiful building, with storks nests adding to the décor! An amazing sight to see in the historical town, which gives way to pretty buildings at either side of a narrow cobbled street with the 'old style' lamp standards further adding to the ambience. Fairly busy during our visit, but yet at the same time it still had a relaxed atmosphere about it. A great opportunity for some nice photos.

A real trip in the past . Narrow streets , beautiful houses , big plaza with many oranges trees . The archway is something to spend some time to see the workmanship of the past and take some nice photos .
