- PatoukeEdinburgh, United Kingdom164 contributionsBeautiful decorThe church isn’t huge but has a beautiful decor and interesting history. Most people probably visit to see The Bones Chapel (Capela dos Ossos), which is located at the back of the cathedral, and part of the general entry. The chapel is very small and decorated with skulls and bones of the monks. Quite an eerie experience but beautifully created. There is a tiny garden/ cemetery next to the chapel and the small sacristy connecting the main church and the chapel. Ticket costs €2, cash only. It’s worth the visit, the square in front of the church has beautiful tiles and there are plenty of good bars and restaurants nearby.Visited September 2023Traveled soloWritten September 20, 2023
- LyndaMNLakeville, Minnesota790 contributionsWOW!I make a point of visiting cathedrals and churches wherever we go. I truly enjoyed seeing this one because it is so unlike what you normally see. It costs about 2 euro to enter and it is certainly worth every cent. You can see this church in about 30 minutes, including the ossuary in the garden area. My husband called the interior 'gaudy.' Ok, I will go with that but this is what makes it impressive. There are large carvings everywhere, huge paintings, and lots of 'gold'. The walls and the altar areas are heavy with eye-candy. It seems not an inch of the interior was left un-adorned. There is an old confessional booth and you can tour the side-rooms that the monks used. This church is well worth stopping by.Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 24, 2023
- GlobetrottingVikingThatcham, United Kingdom3,280 contributionsA Baroque Church and a Chapel with SkullsThis church is probably best known for its Bone Chapel, a separate room behind the church. There the rather macabre sight meets you of walls partly made up of skulls from long departed monks. Apparently this serves as the resting place for some 1,250 skeletons with bones filling every available space making up ghoulish geometrical patterns. The bodies were exhumed in 1816 from Faro's overcrowded cemeteries. They belonged to Carmelite monks who once served in this church. The long-dead monks stare down on you from every surface of the chapel. This is surely one of the creepiest attractions you can find. But the main church is also worth viewing, with its baroque interior featuring intricately carved altars, mostly painted in gold.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 18, 2023

You are just about to visit the iconic "Igreja da Ordem Terceira de Nossa Senhora do Monte do Carmo", or simply, "Igreja do Carmo". Its construction started in 1719 and continued along the 18th and 19th centuries. The result is an awesome baroque façade, beautiful twin bell towers, magnificent gilded carving woodworks (18th century) and fantastic Portuguese tiles (17th century). At its rear, in the adjoining former cemetery, the curious "Capela dos Ossos", built in 1816. Entrance fee at E$ 2,00! Enjoy!

The profound legacy of this Cathedral, both beautiful and sobering, when considering it was created before the Industrial Revolution---and done so over centuries. One can only imagine how this imposing place of worship would impact a population the largely unlettered, with little if any education. No doubt the awe (and fear) entering the Carmo Church would elicit was intense for someone of the 16th century. The gulf between the palatial ornamentation and the hard lives of the people worshiping centuries ago was vast. My son and I walked out filled with thoughts of what a lofty, powerful symbol of Christianity this must have been in the past. Spending two euros to witness this was a trifle indeed.

The church itself was pretty impressive, but I did find the chapel of bones very interesting. It might not be for everyone however. Apparently the bones of a 1000 monks on all the walls and ceilings. Seniors price of 1 euro well worth the visit!

€2 entry fee was well worth it. Small church, but lots to see. We also went outside to see the bone chapel which was very strange but interesting too. Worth reading up about it before you go as there wasn’t much explanation when there.

Worth a look as only a couple of euros to have a wander around. Stunning Church with lots of Gold everywhere. You can walk through to the garden at the back where the Chapel of Bones is located which is very peaceful and thought provoking.

Much more interesting than the Cathedral (though you couldn’t go on top for the view like at the cathedral). What a wealth of gold on display (if it is all still real!). The bones chapel is pretty amazing and MUCH more impressive than at the cathedral.

A longish walk north from our start at the Marina, but well worth it!! The church itself is breathtaking outside and inside... but the (1 Euro entrance fee!) Bones' Chapel (and surrounds) is awe-inspiring, almost creepy with all these skulls staring down at you. Truly spooky and a must-see! The church confessionals too are beautiful yet worrying? (Beggars outside notwithstanding do the walk AND then walk left from out of the church doors and wander on and up to Faro Cemitario!! So weird how we all want to be buried soo differently in different countries!!!
