- GlobetrottingVikingThatcham, United Kingdom3,508 contributionsBeautiful Interior and Great Views from the TowerThis Cathedral building was started in 1251, two years after the Christian Reconquest of Faro from the Muslim Moors. It has undergone several renovations and additions since, the last major changes made after the earthquakes in 1722 and 1755. A rather sad historical fact is that in 1596 the city of Faro and the Cathedral were sacked and burned by the English troops of Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, on their way back from the capture of Cádiz. The altars are marvelously decorated and carved, some with tiled walls with biblical illustrations. The entrance ticket (€2.00 for the over 65s) also gives access to the tower, from where there is great views of the town, the waterfront and the airport. As we stood there, a white stork flew past on its way to its nest on the roof of one of the nearby buildings.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 18, 2023
- Lynda CWokingham, United Kingdom572 contributionsImpressive cathedral, museum and towerFaro cathedral is very impressive. There is a small entry fee. Tower has good views and you can see all bells. Chapel of bones. Cathedral museum on 1st and 2nd floor above cathedral has many ancient religious artifacts. The cathedral itself is very large and ornate. Worth a visit.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 26, 2024

- zardozChelmsford, United Kingdom94 contributionsWorth a quick visit but not unmissableA fairly impressive cathedral. The tower is high enough to have a pleasant view over the harbour and Faro, but not too many steps. Still out of the question if you have mobility issues. There is a small ossuary that isn't on the scale of the "Chapel of Bones" elsewhere in Faro. There are a lot of small statues of various saints in the museum. It's not bad on the whole, but it's not worth busting a gut for.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 1, 2024

There's one thing Faro has in abundance, for such a relatively small place there are churchs and cathedrals galore and for a tourist they are a great way to spend time.
This cathedral as is dates back 500 or so years but the site itself has religous links back 800 years.
The highlights of the Cathedral are the bell tower with views across the city and out to sea and of course the bone chapel which are always a morbid curiosity.
You could spend a couple of hours here but it can be done in an hour if need be and as with most of the area the entrance fee is cheap for what you get.

The “Sé Catedral de Faro”, is also known as the “Igreja da Sé or Igreja de Santa Maria”, and is one of the most important historic buildings in Faro. It is located in Largo da Sé in the city, in the heart of the historic center, and is classified as a Property of Public Interest. It is the seat of the Diocese of Algarve. According to the tradition, not supported by archaeological evidence, the Church of Santa Maria de Faro was built on the foundations of a paleocristan basilica and a mosque. What is known is that the works of the current building were started in the year 1251, two years after the Christian reconquest of the village, by order of the Archbishop of Braga D. João Viegas. In the year 1271, this temple was given to the Order of St. James, as a reward for the services rendered in taking the settlement. from the Moors.

The cathedral tower offers a great view! Don't miss it. The ascent goes via a narrow staircase, oncoming traffic impossible and the steps are partly high and exited. But it's worth it. The cathedral with many side chapels is also worth seeing. Very decorated with the typical blue tiles of the region, as well as a small museum. All together it costs 5 euros to enter, which is a fair price, even if some people think there should be no admission for churches. To them I recommend the time of worship.

Went to visit the cathedral. Gentle way to spend an hour. Interior of the cathedral is being renovated so a lot of scaffolding but you can still see most of the interior. My husband climbed the steps to the top of the tower and had magnificent views.

This cathedral is well worth the admission cost. The altar and side chapels are ornately decorated, there are many interesting statues, and cherubs abound. The stairs to the tower are a little tricky if you have mobility issues but the view is wonderful. Be aware that the bells ring regularly and loudly. The small bones chapel is open to the air and most skulls have disintegrated but it is easy to access and worth a look. Overall, we'd certainly recommend a visit to this cathedral.

To be honest the two guys who were in charge, one in the paying booth and the other by the stairs were so disconnected it was comical. We pairs and they didn’t want to answer any questions. Went up a stairs, saw a nice view and walked through a small cathedral, that was very pretty, lit a few candles and left. €5x2

Faro Cathedral is one of the main religious monuments of the Algarve, it has a very long history, yet it didn't particularly strike me. First of all, the view of the exterior leaves something to be desired: the original Gothic tower remains incongruous with the rest of the building, there is no real facade, and the complex offers no monumentality to a somewhat insignificant and small square to parking.
The interior includes a number of elements that are interesting in themselves, but which fail to blend into a unified whole. The main altar was, at the time of the visit, covered by scaffolding; Among the numerous chapels, those of the Rosario stand out, which combines talha dourada with azulejos, and that of Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres, with its rich decoration; The eighteenth-century organ also deserves attention. Just outside the cathedral, another chapel is decorated with bones and skulls, like the similar (and more famous) one in the Carmine church in Faro itself.
For the complete visit you pay 5 euros and you can also climb the tower, from which you have beautiful views of the ocean. Overall, however, I believe that in Portugal there are cathedrals more worthy of a visit, even in less touristy cities (for example that of Viseu, which is even free to enter, which is far from common in the two Iberian countries).

When I entered the Cathedral there were 3 old ladies on guard and as I went to enter the main part I was asked, 'Are you a Christian?' I was shocked! I had never been asked that before in any of the many cathedrals and churches I have visited. Nor have I been asked if I was a Muslim at any of the mosques I have visited in the Middle East and Asia. It gave the impression that non-Christians were certainly not welcome. I did not reply, but turned around and left, rather than show my annoyance.
