I'd never heard of Fado. Until now. What an excellent use of 30 minutes or so. Up close and personal in a very intimate setting. Great talent. Innovative presentation. He even passed his precious guitar around for us to hold and try out!
You don't even have to be a fan of this type of music to appreciate the experience. Recommended.
Oh, and it cost 5€.

João Cuña is not only a sensitive and able performer on the Portuguese guitar, but he presents a frequent, brief, highly polished one man show in the Archaeological Museum in the Old Town of Faro. We, and the Swiss couple who made up the select audience, felt that we were experiencing an intimate and personal recital in the small but comfortable room on the first floor. João Cuña's mix of audio-visual presentation, solo performance and duet with recording made for an outstanding lecture-recital (he used English for our benefit). We came out both impressed with the musicality and informed on the surprisingly approachablel, if esoteric, subject.
I think anyone will really appreciate João's recital - my wife is a professional pianist and we have both been press music critics and university teachers in the past - we were impressed and hope you will have the opportunity to enjoy this amazing (and cheap!) experience.
The rest of the museum is well worth a visit - you pay for the recital at the museum entrance desk.

Hey, d’ya know what, if a really niche musical instrument is what you’re after, then this is fine, if not then it’s a fairly arduous half hour of your life taken away!
The venue for this activity is terrific, on the second floor of an old Chapel, a landmark building in Faro, right on the edge of the Old Town, full of character, atmosphere and history.
Also to be fair, the guy who presents the multi-media show and performs live with the Portuguese guitar is supremely talented and proud of his tradition.
I’m not a music purist, I know what I like, two of my all-time favourite guitar pieces would be Cavatina and Concierto de Aranquez, so I do appreciate skilled guitar playing.
The sound from the Portuguese guitar (in my humble opinion) was not tuneful, was not melodic and was not entertaining.

Dear visitor, First sorry for any inconvenience about my show. Second as a musician for more then 30 years and as a classical guitar player also i have to tell you that your opinion about the portuguese guitar sound its not fair neither makes so much sense because you were looking for a similar sound between two different musical instruments. The portuguese guitar with 12 steel strings and a different range of notes comparing with the classical guitar has a unique sound that could be characterized as full with resonance and harmonic rich, with dynamics that possibility a great sound projection. As a musical instrument is great to pass through the emotions for the audience. Of course im sad that you didn`t enjoyed the sound of my guitar and in my humble opinion i think you should give another opportunity and listen my guitar again. Best regards, João Cuña

We went back to the Algarve and among other activities we chose a rainy day for an indoor activity. We love fado music and we had already attend to many performances of it mainly in Lisbon fado houses. The show we decided to watch in Faro is located in a room of the local tourist office. It catches our attention because it is very affordable and during daytime. Our astonishment and deep discontent was due to the fact that in tripadvisor description we're told that it is a fado music performance among other musical genres when in fact it is not!! The fado music we know is a sung music and i believe should be presented by three musicians including the portuguese guitar the classical guitar and one singer. What we have seen, although musically good, was a Portuguese guitar recital with explanations about the different musical genres played by ONE guitarist. We did not watch fado music and that's why we consider a fraudulent use of a musical genre that attracts the attentions of the tourists. I do not recommend and strongly suggest the ones in charge to change the description in your tripadvisor page.

I think you did a BIG misunderstood about the recital and calling my cultural activity a scam is a offense, but let's get clear about your arguments: First check in the dictionary what means recital : its a music performance and Portuguese Guitar Recital always will be a Portuguese Guitar performance anywhere ok? Second I play Portuguese guitar in the recital In a solo performance because you can play any style of music with or without other instruments in solo performances. And Of course I'm not saying anywhere in my publicity that I'm playing with other musicians. Third, as musician, composer and producer I had create this tribute to the Portuguese guitar as a unique and original production. I concepted all the project, produced all the videos and composed some of the songs and it could be so much easier to do the tipical "Fado for turist" That you were looking for Here in this tribute to the Portuguese guitar I play the instrumental fado from Lisbon and Coimbra and more contemporanean styles. And I got he short movies with the brief history of The Portuguese Guitar and the Fado. That's what I do and everything is well explained in the flyer. So where is that scam? After 6 years of recital performances you were the first one but of course it doesn't means that I don't care about that. I play from my soul and it' was a shame to read your comments. Sorry but you should be more honest in your comments for the next time and please always RESPECT the others. João Cuña

If you want to experience authentic Portuguese culture and music give them a try. They have recitals every Sunday and we walked in unannounced and there were gracious enough to accommodate us. More than just music, fado is an insight into a culture. Good energy!

Mr Cuna’s musical talents and presentation were first-rate. The surroundings, in a small chapel above the Arco Vila, under the stork nests (!), in the old Chapel of the Pregnant Virgin, was enchanting.

Whatever you do, if you love music, don't miss this. I was the only one there but was still treated with extreme courtesy. Not only is the music superb, the audience is also informed re the history of the Portuguese guitar.
