To have an easy visit of the city of Faro, the best thing to do is to drive to the location “Largo de São Francisco” which is a good sized parking place and on top is free, but it is well known, so be on time to get a spot to leave the car. And doing so you are rightaway at the “Muralhas de Faro”, This antiek walls are involving the oldest urban nucleus in the city, which they call today "Vila-Adentro" or "Cidade Velha".
They believe that the primitive town wall predates the Roman invasion of the Iberian peninsula. It got rebuilt in the 9th century, this during the reign of Ben Bekr, prince of a small Muslim kingdom that became independent from the Emirate of Cordoba.
During the Almohad period, two towers were built in one of the main entrances, a group currently known as "Arco do Repouso".
With the conquest of the city by the forces of Afonso III of Portugal (in the year 1249), its walls were rebuilt. At this stage, the urban network corresponded to two distinct nuclei: the so-called "Vila Adentro" (current parish of Santa Maria), where the religious temples, the Jewish quarter and the houses of the Christians were located; and the "Ribeira", residential area of the highest social classes. In the current downtown area, Mouraria was installed, where since the year 1269, the Moors were forced to reside.

Muralhas de Faro does not relate to the tiled murals, which can be found at different locations in the city. Muralhas can be translated as walls. The Great Wall of China, in Portuguese, is: A Grande Muralha da China. As you walk around the old city you will encounter the walls at numerous times. It is possible to follow them around a considerable part of the Old Town, but I did not. Interesting to see.

My daughter and I walked in a circle around the Faro Walls. This turned out to be an interesting walk. We always like relaxed areas, so for us, the most enjoyable part of Faro Walls was at Parque Biossaudavel with the green grass, trees, seating areas, and the blue and white tiled panels depicting scenes from the past. The park is a nice area in the very historical city to view the Faro Walls from.
The only disappointing aspect as far as we were concerned is the amount of graffiti found at random areas.

The historic city of Faro was protected from invasions by these walls. Hundreds of years old and impressive to see. There are murals along the walls depicting some of the battles

Magnificent historic walls of the old castle that are well maintained and also offer great views of the Ria Formosa National Park. Lots of information available at various points. Lovely atmospheric old streets to walk along. Wear sensible footwear though because of the cobbled roads.

The walls, like so many town walls, speak of a bygone age of terrifying insecurity, of dangerous pirates and enemy raids, etc. Parts of the walls contain residences and restaurants that look fascinating.
We only had half an hour to kill before we took a boat out to the fascinating Barrier Islands that separate Faro from the sea, but it was half an hour well spent. Given our short time scale, we only did half the walls, putting off the other side until our return from the boat trip. In the end we got sidetracked and never completetd the full circle of the old town. But I am sure it would have been as full of surprises as its seaward side.

The "Muralhas de Faro" are also known as the "Muralhas de Vila Adentro". Since the Roman times in the Iberian Peninsula, these awesome oval shaped Walls protect the historical center of Faro, the so called "Vila Adentro". As everything else, they have undergone, along the centuries, many enlargements, reconstructions, restorations and, surprisingly, a great part of it has survived up to our days. An important chapter of Faro's history has been written in these magnificent Walls. They witnessed wars, invasions, reconquests, pirates and even an earthquake! Amazing resilience! Check the Walls and its three remaining gates: "Arco da Vila" and the adjoining "Porta Árabe" (at the Arch's end), "Arco do Repouso" e "Portas do Mar" (also known as "Porta Nova"). Enjoy!

Spent a week in Faro sight seeing. Beautiful town with plenty to see and do - jump on a bus and train to explore further afield.
