This is a statue of one of the former Kings of Portugal and the Algarve. It stands outside Faro cathedral in the historic old town

Dom Afonso III at the time of writing, commanded the road works (cobble stone team), the builders wagons and the umpteen cars that tried to park somewhere near to the Museum. Standing tall and proud, he was resplendent in his demeanour.

Although its undoubtedly well made, unless you are particularly interested in Portuguese history its just another statue and easy to walk past without looking to see who its for.

Dom Alfonso 3 was the first King of Portugal who captured the Algarve region from the Moors in the 12th century by seizing Faro. Unfortunately this information had to come from our guide as there was no easily accessible information on this important historical figure.

If you were just exploring the old town you would easily walk past it as it is just another statue, as a tourist there wasn't much to identify it or him as a special figure.
