By chance we went to take a look at this lighthouse. There happened to be a man at the fence in navy uniform. This turned out to be the lighthouse keeper. We immediately got a tour from him.. not knowing that a few minutes later we would be all the way up to the lighthouse lamp. And at the top we could enjoy the view. This nice lighthouse keeper, named Edgar talked passionately about his work as a keeper and were shown different rooms in the lighthouse. We happened to be there on Wednesday, because then the tower is open in the afternoon for tours (between 12 and 15 hours, there would also be site for the exact times) Admission was free and is really very nice to visit partly by Edgar. Recommended:)

During summer the lighthouse is open for tours on Wednesdays at 2.30pm, 3.30pm and 4.30pm. Theres usually a note attached to the gate explaining this. It’s a great tour and lovely view from the top. Well worth a visit. Nice walk nearby too so a good afternoon out.

Visited on a Wednesday when the lighthouse is open to visitors - naval guide only speaks Portuguese but this didn't seem to matter to any of us.Interesting tour and easy first climb up the staircase followed by two narrowing/steeper climbs so be warned! Visitors book to record names etc and comments and just wish we'd had some euros with us to 'tip' the guy as well worth it.

Heading away from Carvoeiro towards Benegil, take the first road on the right past Rocha Brava Village Resort. The lighthouse is at the end of the road. there are rough ground areas to park on both sides, but be careful of the potholes, or you could park on the road.
You can't get near the lighthouse, but take a walk round to the right for a better view. There's a large hole (barriered off) that opens into a large cave where small boats take tourists into. Take a walk slightly down and along the cliff for better views of the cave. It's rough ground, so not recommended for anyone with mobility problems, but an interesting walk for others.

Every Wednesday from 1400 to 1600, you can have a tour of the lighthouse for free. The lighthouse keeper speaks good English, and is very friendly. You have to climb a total of 100 steps, the last few being very narrow. At the top you can see the light (1000watt) and 1 tonne prism that sits on mercury. It can be turned with fingers of one hand, it is so well designed. The beam reaches out 29 nautical miles (around 34 statute miles) and flashes twice every 14 seconds.
You have to back down the last few steps to descend, and please don't touch the prism itself as the sweat from your hands will mark the glass.
A €5 tip was much appreciated!
No booking required, just turn up at the gate from 2pm.
Enjoy.

Honestly, this lighthouse is nothing special but if you walk a half mile to the left of it - the cliffside area offers you spectacular views. The same can be said to the right too so it is the entire stretch of ocean cliffs that make this area of the Algarve awesome!

This is lighthouse on top of hill on the ocean. There is a great view and easy walking trails. Good restaurants along the way.

Well you would expect a lighthouse to be in a prominent location and this one is just that. Unparalleled views to the east and west and a useful landmark for the coastal paths in both directions. We did get into the lighthouse and to honest you need to be a lighthouse efficionardo to get the maximum benefit. However, at 98 years old there is enough history and engineering to amuse even the most sceptical of visitors. Manned by enthusiastic volunteers they tour lasts about 20 mins up the stairs, see the light, go outside for the view and then back down again. It’s not Disney but it’s a glimpse into the world of operational light houses which is unusual.

Ok, so when we visited, the lighthouse was closed - if you do plan to visit, be sure to check opening times! The lighthouse from the outside doesn’t look like much, nothing to really say about it other than it could use a fresh lick of paint.

So, why the 5-star review?
The location of the lighthouse offers some amazing views! You can walk along the cliff, overlooking the coast and caves below. Its all pretty safe as long as you stick to the trail. I would advise comfortable shoes and a bottle of water if you visit on a hot day. You can easily spend hours walking along admiring the views. Unfortunately we were in a bit of a rush and didn’t get to stick around for as long as we wanted to, but the little we did see was pretty amazing.

Highly recommend! If not for the lighthouse itself, then for its stunning location and views.

This was just down the road from our villa so we walked past it many many times. It is worth taking the trip to see it although only possible from the outside at the time we were there. We became very fond of the lighthouse which at night is a lovely sight to behold...it's ok during the day too, just more dramatic in the dark.
