The old town is a beautiful white city with cobbled streets, where you can find over 100 family focused restaurants.
The Strip is renowned for its nightlife full of clubs, pubs and bars that stay open till early morning.
Still this historical town has good vibrant.
I drove it's narrow Street, but I would definitely like to tour it on foot.

Such a unique area to visit - filled with small shops, kiosks, bars, restaurants and a lovely town square, all along winding cobbled streets. It's a great place to find quality souveniers if you take the time to wander and compare prices. Located on two beaches - Praia dos Pescadores, accessed by the outdoor escalator and Praia do Peneco, accessed through the tunnel, it's a great place to spend a whole day. The live music at the town square was a real treat while we ate lunch at an outdoor cafe.

Centro Historico de Albufeira is a place that is well worth a visit , it is a lovely place to walk around with lots of lovely quiet streets to explore. There are lots of bars, restaurants, shops and stalls selling jewellery, clothing, leather bags and lots of other gifts. At night the square comes alive with live music playing from the bars surrounding the square. The beautiful beach is a very short walk and is stunning.

The old town has some pretty architecture and cobbled streets but has been so commercialised it has lost any charm. The streets are lined with endless shops of plastic rubbish from China (I can’t believe there is still a market for this stuff). The majority of the restaurant are covered in neon signs, serving burgers, kebabs etc. and filled with flat screen TVs showing televised sport, loud music and touts trying to drag you in off the street. The whole area made me feel quite sad. This is an area that has plenty of potential but this highly commercialised, brits-abroad style tourism really lets the place down.

Albufeira caters for the beach and drinking tourist these days. There's little to see of interest in the town and the 'Centro Historico de Albufeira' is little more than a mass of cheap eat places and cheap shops, There are far more interesting town centres along the Algarve. Tavira is especially nice and not tacky.

The Old Town of Albufeira doesn't have any remarkable landmark but it is still a charming place to visit. It has plenty of restaurants and bars for young and old, singles and families, it's by the beach and has a few sightseeing spots that are totally worth it. If it would have more local guides and walking tours, it would definitely have a better vibe and would help tourists feel more the history of the city. I suggest taking a walk after lunch, coming from the side of the marina (that's the oldest part) and down to the beach. Lay down on the beach, get some sun tan and then head to a bar at the square for a few pints. Make your way to the escalator and be sure to be at the top to watch the sunset. Go home, shower, dress for the night, head to a restaurant, have a nice meal and then hit the bars. Enjoy your stay!

Memories of the Old Town include lots of market stalls, quaint shops, bars, live music, locals sitting around the square just talking with their families.
Sadly most of the quaint shops and stalls are gone, with the streets from the beach up to the square dominated by music bars, each trying to outdo their neighbours in the volume stakes. Any live music is scarce, and they’re playing out in the street, also in the noise competitions.
There are some nice restaurants about, but they’re a bit out of the way, and you need a fair idea where you’re going to find them.
Sadly it’s getting more like the Strip.

Dreadful place that makes Benidorm look like the South of France. The Strip is horrendous, full of blokes in football tops, tacky bars, stag parties, etc. We were told The Old Town was more mature but it's basically the same with older hooligans. You'd never know you were in Portugal, it's like Blackpool in the sun. We only had three days and that was too much. Only saving grace was the decent weather and a nice Aldi.

I visited just after the New Year's Celebration so there was still a bit of a buzz around the place. It is typical of most Portuguese towns in the Algarve, with steep streets and laneways that converge into the main square. Plenty of bars, restaurants and souvenir shops selling mostly the same items..The beach is accessed through a "tunnel" or from the lift from higher ground to the East..I can imagine how busy/crazy the place gets during High Season

I'm Irish so I feel slightly guilty about the title but it's true. I've seen nothing but the dredges of Irish here. We naively came here expecting a beautiful quiet fishing village. Instead we got a strip advertising all day breakfasts and tack! If you're young and going on holidays for the first I'd make an exception but anyone seeking some culture needs to run a mile.
We did our best to arrange activities on the coast and even moved hotels to get out of the old town. We leave tomorrow and will never return here.
Porto is an amazing city! Lisbon is also worth a visit if you don't mind hills. Lots of local obscurities to be found.

I asked my sister-in-law who has lived there. She says it's not the same in December because lots of places are closed. She advised April - October as the window to visit Albufeira. Good luck!

Hi there I am traveling on a hen party for the weekend in May. We want to see the old town and have a nice meal outside with some live music are most of the restaurants still open on Sundays and offer live music. Any bar/restaurant recommendations aswell as sights to see would be extremely helpful. Many thanks

There are lots of bars and restaurants serving food which are all open in Sunday’s. Not too sure about the live music through the day but definitely at night. Bar street in the old town (just if the corner of the main square has live music outside where you can sit and listen outside at one of the many bars on the pedestrianised crossroad. Enjoy 😉

Hi again! My parents are comming to Portugal in June foot a week, can anyone suggest a hotel/apartment that is on the flat with no hilly inclines that might be centrally located in the Old Town so that they can easily access shops and restaurants? My Dad uses a walking stick. Maybe if Old Town isn't suitable can anyone recommend any other resorts?
Thank you,
Kate

Hotel Inatel or Sol e Mar are right on the beach with no hills. These will be close but not noisy as your parents sound quite senior. If they can put up with the noise then the Hotel California has had a renovation this year but is right in party central till midnight as is the Baltum hotel.

Hi,
We are a family of 5 going to Portugal in June, any recommendations on where to stay ,we want to be able to walk to the old town and beach . I wondered if either Parque Da Corcovado and Solario De Sa Jose are near the Old Town or which is better?
Thank you,
Kate.

Hi Kathleen I know Albufeira very well but I don't have knowledge of either of those places. I've googled them and no neither are at all within walking distance of beach or old town. I usually stay close to the centre and the best one I can think of for a family is Albufeira Jardim. Hope this is helpful. Please message me again if you need any further help!

Is the old town suitable for a couple 26/27 years old?
We have been twice before but have stayed by the strip both times, we did love the strip and the nightlife but wanted a change for next year, we only went to the old town for dinner and a couple of drinks it’s beautiful and we said if we come again we’ll stay there instead! We will be going end of July start of August.
Do couples our age stay in the old town?
Do bars stay open past 2 am ?
Will there be a good nightlife atmosphere?
TIA

Hola!
