The old town has some pretty architecture and cobbled streets but has been so commercialised it has lost any charm. The streets are lined with endless shops of plastic rubbish from China (I can’t believe there is still a market for this stuff). The majority of the restaurant are covered in neon signs, serving burgers, kebabs etc. and filled with flat screen TVs showing televised sport, loud music and touts trying to drag you in off the street. The whole area made me feel quite sad. This is an area that has plenty of potential but this highly commercialised, brits-abroad style tourism really lets the place down.

Albufeira caters for the beach and drinking tourist these days. There's little to see of interest in the town and the 'Centro Historico de Albufeira' is little more than a mass of cheap eat places and cheap shops, There are far more interesting town centres along the Algarve. Tavira is especially nice and not tacky.

The old town is a beautiful white city with cobbled streets, where you can find over 100 family focused restaurants.
The Strip is renowned for its nightlife full of clubs, pubs and bars that stay open till early morning.
Still this historical town has good vibrant.
I drove it's narrow Street, but I would definitely like to tour it on foot.

Commercialisation is rife and has taken over the ‘old town’ which actually isn’t really that old anyway. Head to the museum and clock tower to see the more ‘authentic’ area but you may feel those stairs make the effort unjustified.

A disappointment.

In the same way that the Costa’s are not representative of the true Spain, the Algarve and Albefuira in particular, is not representative of the true Portugal.
The historic centre does give you a glimpse, but you need to search it out away from the tourist focussed sections and If your experience of the Old Town is just the central square and it’s surrounding streets with its tourist tackiness and lack of culture, then I can understand some of the reviews below.
However you have to explore a bit further to find the remaining untouched bits. You are looking for the streets between the Porta do Norte and the Portas Da Villa Antiquity Bar, and if you need a Google reference point then I would suggest to use the Três Coroas restaurant or the Capela da Misericórdia and then explore the streets surrounding these. Then the area around the clock tower and the Catholic Church Igreja Matriz de Albufeira is worth exploring also.
If you want to escape from the bland bar scene then these areas are nice to explore during the day.

I visited just after the New Year's Celebration so there was still a bit of a buzz around the place. It is typical of most Portuguese towns in the Algarve, with steep streets and laneways that converge into the main square. Plenty of bars, restaurants and souvenir shops selling mostly the same items..The beach is accessed through a "tunnel" or from the lift from higher ground to the East..I can imagine how busy/crazy the place gets during High Season

We ventured here for the first time at our 25th wedding anniversary with kids in town, ten our 27th, this was our 40th. It is as wonderful as ever and we had great warm walking days in February.
A number of locales were closed for the season, but that made it better for us as we prefer to not have the crowds

The Old Town in the day time is totally different to night time. In the day time it is not packed and people are shopping, having a drink or something to eat. At night it is totally manic and there are 1000's of people walking around the street. All of the restaurants, bars and clubs are packed out and some of the music is extremely loud. It has a party atmosphere, which will suit some people but not others. It is also very popular with stag and hen parties. There is a very wide age range but more favoured by very young people. However, you should definitely give it a go.

Dreadful place that makes Benidorm look like the South of France. The Strip is horrendous, full of blokes in football tops, tacky bars, stag parties, etc. We were told The Old Town was more mature but it's basically the same with older hooligans. You'd never know you were in Portugal, it's like Blackpool in the sun. We only had three days and that was too much. Only saving grace was the decent weather and a nice Aldi.

This city has vast beaches which seems to be its only interest.
Low-end restaurants with touts. Bars populated primarily by festive English people all day long..
Asian version craft shops..
The counterpart of Lloret des Mar in Spain.
To discover if you have time otherwise go your way without regrets
