Good News for everyone who like us, spent many enjoyable nights in The Moonflower Bar.

Gil is now back in town and as good as ever ! He is now performing in The Rockline Bar every night from around 10pm onwards. We were there last night and what a great night we had. There were many brilliant singers and a few familiar faces from the Moonflower days. We left at 2.45am and Gil was still going strong !

(Rockline is the bar at the corner underneath the Oura Praia Hotel).

For a start it is not on Rua Jose Fontana, but on a continuation of it over the roundabout and just on the right when you are then in Estrada Santa Eulália.
If you are looking for a boozy rave-up this is not the place for you. However if you a dedicated singer like me this was karaoke-heaven. Trevor and Beccy are a lovely couple who make you very welcome and run the show most professionally where they have backings for just about every song ever penned, unlike some places where you struggle to find a song that you have ever heard of in a paper thin book. What with very reasonable drink prices we had a great time
Out of interest next night we went to a bar much nearer to our hotel that advertised Karaoke Night. We went in and everyone was watching European football. I said 'no karaoke then' Oh yes said the barmen, tell us what you want to sing and we will switch the football off. Not wishing to be found floating in the sea face down, we beat a hasty retreat.

just got back from Oura Praia, where we have paid at least one holiday per year for the last ten years or more. We were introduced to the Old house by our wives who were there in may for a " Girly " break in may and what a truly fabulouse time we had. Trevor, Beccy, Tony and Linda work as a great team. in fact they made us so welcome that we sat talking to them until the early hours of the morning after the Karaoke on more than one occasion. I must say a very personal thank you to Trevor. When he found out that i had suffered with cancer of the larynx some time ago and had difficulty with my singing, thereby losing my confidence in joining in with the Karaoke, he worked his magic with his machine and had me warbling away like a good 'un before we came home. The clientelle were smashing and i just hope that the young local singers are in when you go, we truly thought they were professionals at first and then found out they are a gang of smashing kids who just love singing. Roll on June of next year. Peter, Annie, Brian and Marlene. ( aka Pensioners on Tour).

Have been going to the moonflower now known as the the old house for many years while gill was there. We knew that he was no longer there but went along with an open mind but was very disappointed. Gill was a showman and entertained in between very good regular singers and visiting tourists, now it has become just a same old same old karaoke bar. What a shame.

Just back from Portugal fifth year in a row we always went to the moonflower when gill and Alicia ran it so we were weary about trying it out under the new mangement, needing have worried we had a fantastic time beccy, Trevor and alex are great made us very welcome met a few of the old crowd that were there previous years and the singers are very good. I did miss gill he was such a laugh always joking but beccy did a great job in mixing with everyone and she has a fantastic voice. We will go back again next year and like this year will spend everynight in the moonflower bar. Do give it a try you will have a great time. To gill and Alicia we wish you all the best

Ahhhh Patricia, I am someone who knows the family and the situation at the bar. I can say with certainty that Gil and Alicia were asked to leave after not paying the electric from the meter linked to the restaurant for 8 months, they also failed to pay their rent. The restaurant owner placed his son there to observe after Gil told them the bar was not making money. Within the first week, it was obvious this was not true. Gil was asked to pay all that was owed to the bar owner, he refused and was told to leave. There have also been other people asking where they are as they are owed money too.

The bar closed in September and was reopened as The Old House on 21st October as touristlovesportugal stated. The "stag party" was while Gil was still there, if you look below your review it clearly states there was a group of 11 there, visiting in September and also state that the bar closed while they were still there.

It is purely down to Gil and Alicia why the bar closed. They were given enough chances to pay what they owed but didn't. So please stop telling everyone how badly they were treated, they are gone now, and the bar is new and doing very well ... in fact it is doing better than when Gil and Alicia had it.

With reference to touristloveportugal; the reference in my review stated that i last visited the bar in june 2012(which is correct), but the "stag party" referred to reliable friends who visited the bar after Gil had left, so i believe you have got your dates wrong as to when the bar was shut. These friends are older and totally reliable so i trust the source entirely.
As far as ukdiva's comment(regrading owing money) is concerned,my understanding is that this is a rumour bandied about by the family to discredit Gil and Alicia so as to make it as difficult as possible for them to start up again and compete with the bar.
As always with these situations only one side of the story is usually heard by each party so the truth is difficult to assess.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion but it would be a bit more adult if people could communicate without using offensive terminology.

We visited this bar in December, thoroughly enjoyed ourselves too!! The new owners Tony and Linda are a lovely couple. I did speak to her why the bar changed hands, was told the previous owner owed a lot of money to the landlord. Becci and Trevor who do the karaoke are professional, funny, and really nice people and very popular. It seemed wherever we went everyone had heard of them lol. Alex is a young lad that works the tables Friday and Saturday, he is so sweet and polite, and always has a smile on his face.

The bar is packed out on Friday and Saturday, we learned that if you wanted a good seat you had to get there as close to 8pm as possible, even though the karaoke doesn't start till 9.30pm. All I can say about the singers is WOW!!! They were all so good!! I did sing a song or two .... after the usual dutch courage!

Drinks are cheap too, 2 euros for a large beer, 3.50 for a vodka and coke, so me and my fella were happy.

I would definitely recommend you visit this bar, you will have a fab time, and go back time and time again like we did over the month holiday.
