No more warm waters at Sao Torpes!
Aug 2020
Sao Torpes is an attractive beach at Costa Vicentina (between Lisbon and Algarve.
It became famous for its warm waters thanks to the Charcoal Thermoelectric power plant that cools its equipment with sea water and it returns at higher temperature to the sea.
BUT the thermoelectric plant has been disabled since January 2020 due to the government's decision to no longer have coal plants.
SO no more warm waters but Sao Torpes ( Saint Tropez in Portuguese) is a nice spot to surf and bodyboard and its fans.

the tide comes in FAST at this wide-open-to-the-Atlantic beach.... the surfers love it cuz of the power plant nearby
Oct 2019
clean, powerful, beach. the nearby powerplant adds a few degrees to the water temp, but this beach gets the Euro blue star or whatever they call it for being a top notch clean great beach.

Crystal clean

Not a very big beach but it's one of the cleanest and well kept in the location.
The water is almost always a little cold and you can see the sea bed with ease.
There are no eateries close by so carry your own food.
Lots of games happening all around till late in the evening. Definitely worth a visit in this lovely little town.

Avoid Kalux Bar and Restaurant at all cost !!
Dec 2018 • Friends
Sao Torpes Beach and surf break is a dream. The main pick is in front of the small bridge. Ideal surf spot for beginners and intermediate. Not so good for surfing in the summer months: too small waves, not much to play with. But very good for student paddle-boarders.

Kalux Restaurant, 1st one you see when you get there, used to be a cool hang-out for surfers and student-surfers.
But Kalux, the man himself, is now too busy running other restaurants in Sines, the nearby town, and this jewell by the beach is now ran by an awful person: Karina.
I'm guessing she's related to the owner because the staff is very obviously scared of her (and baffled at how she treats customers).
Stay on the beach for sandwiches or enjoy good foods in the other 5 bars and restaurants, all just a bit south on the 1.5km stretch of the same road.
Best food is at Art & Sal and its neighboor restaurant (sorry I forgot the name of the neighbor, but very good too, same parking lot), beach right in front with cool no-surf zone for kids.

Enjoy!

Aloha to all!

Nice beach
Aug 2016 • Family
Nice beach with warm water next to wall of rocks.
On summer it's difficult to park the car.

There are surf schools on the beach.

Kid friendly
May 2016 • Family
The São Torpes' beach is perfect for families. Very flat with fine sand and the water temperature quite pleasant (some say due to the cooling of the eye sore in the back ground - a thermoelectric plant). Nonetheless is a very safe beach due to the level of water being so shallow for so long. The easy access and abundant parking means that at times it may be busy. Services available comprise bar, restaurant (with other close by) and surf school with many dedicated teachers.
