Visiting one of the most important churches of Évora!
Jan 2020
At the very site of the old "Hermitage of Saint Antoninho" and near a Roman "Triumphal Arch" (both demolished) , the famous Infante Dom Henrique, Cardenal of Évora, ordered the construction of a new church. It was built between 1557 and 1563, with characteristics of the late Renaissance style, and was dedicated to "Santo Antão", a very popular saint in Portugal. The famous "Igreja de Santo Antão" dominates the beautiful "Praça do Giraldo", in the historic quarter of Évora. The "Chafariz da Praça do Giraldo", a baroque fountain, is right in front of it. Check its interior, with beautiful altars, rare marbles, side chapels, famous paintings and gilded sculptureworks. Two magnificent bell towers ornate its facade. Infante Dom Henrique became, in 1578, King of Portugal and reigned as Henrique I. His "Igreja de Santo Antão" became one of the most important churches of Évora and was appointed, in 1970, as a "Portuguese National Monument". Unmissable! Enjoy!

Free Entry
Jan 2020 • Couples
This church has free entry but charges 50 cents for those wishing to take pictures. Not that large and requires minimal time to check out.

Right in Giraldo Square, this church is well worth a visit or attending a service. It's a medium size church that is nice on the outside and gorgeous on the inside. Well worth a stop in!

The floors were pretty cool as they were wooden panels between limestone tiles. Very peaceful and quiet

If passing have a look inside, but compared to the other churches around there is not much to see. Better to enjoy the other churches close by.

A VERY HOT DAY IN A HOT CHURCH
Sep 2018 • Couples
Our travel agent told us about this historical town just a train ride from Lisbon and suggested we take the train and enjoy the town walking around and also eating a well known restaurant.

On this day in September (22nd of 2018) it was extremely hot and humid in this area. When we got off the train in Evora we waited along with others our turn for a taxi ride into town. If it hadn't been so warm this day, we would have probably taken our time and walked into the city center. Instead we finally caught a cab and stopped at the restaurant (a separate review).

Before and after lunch we did attempt to walk around. Again, due to the heat outside we really could not enjoy what I'm sure would have been more of what this historical town provides. After walking as much as we could after lunch, we came across this church. It seemed like a good place to stop to sit and rest. My wife was holding up better than me and wanted to walk around the area more. So, she left and I stayed to cool off. Time passed on and I then needed to use the restroom there. However, the church staff said I could if I paid some money? Well, this didn't seem very hospitable for the church. Besides, my wife had all the money and I had no change. That didn't change their minds. So, I just waited for my wife to return. In the meantime, this church is not mechanically cooled and it just felt like a steam bath inside. Sorry, but this really dampened my perception of this church. Finally, it does appear it needs some more renovation inside.
