The second most important in Portugal, I suppose behind Coimbra.

It was the Jesuits who established there with the Colegio del Espíritu Santo in 1559 and until their expulsion in 1759 by the Marquis of Pombal, there were 200 years of splendor.

It is currently part of the University of Évora. Cloister, hallways, classrooms, with their tiles representing themes related to studies, are worth a visit.

Another of the places for those who enjoy the remarkable Portuguese tiles. By the way, the Estremoz tile museum is a must-see place, as an Argentinian would say.

The entrance is just after that of the Church of the St Esprit, going down. Lots of tiles both in the ambulatory and in the classrooms (if they are not occupied). Beautiful library on the 1st floor, a little difficult to find because it is not signposted. Worth the detour for €3.

Being in a group, we only had time for a quick outside glimpse of this old and significant university and the neighboring Jesuit church, Ingreja do Espirito Santo. We hope we will be back there in our next visit!

Maybe I am picky, but in a city like Evora with so much to see, leave the University to the end and only if you have extra time. The outside is not that impressive and, yes, this is the second oldest university in the country, but, so what?

Just behind the cathedral and the Roman temple, we were glad we got to the Evora University before it closed. The city as a whole is beautiful, so you wouldn't guess what is in store for you as you look at the building from the outside. But as soon as you step into the place, from the Church to the cloister and the Azulejo-walled classrooms, this is a great place, one of the most beautiful, albeit tiny, universities we have ever seen.
Entry is free. They have a student shop just like on US campuses where you can buy goodies such as T-Shirts (8€), pencils (0,50€), Evora university mugs (less than 5€), notepads...
Girl t-shirts on sale were 3€.

The university used to be free for visitors, but now they charge 3 Euros. Still it is worth a stroll to see the blue tiles throughout the halls and rooms. If you eat at the cafeteria, you can avoid the admission price.

Our hotel told us that the Cathedral and the University were the two sites we had to visit and I would agree with them. The building was very interesting and to be able to wander around an active university whilst the student were studying is a unique experience.
Well worth the minimal charge.

You can simply walk in and go through the corridors. Old rooms still being used for lectures! Worth a visit, even if not all guides advise you.

It is strange that for visiting the university, one still has to pay for a ticket (3 Euro), but it is worth for a visit to see the beautiful buildings as well as the atmosphere of the university.
