This former convent and now a pousada (quality hotel) is located in the same square as the Temple of Diana. It looks very interesting from the outside, but it was closed when I visited in the 2nd week of Octoer. I emailed the pousada and they replied stating that, " Unfortunately, the Pousada in Evora is expected to reopen by the 2nd November."

My husband, Graham, and I spent a most enjoyable four nights here in Cell 105 - despite the name, the room, indeed a former monk's cell, was very comfortable and tastefully decorated, with a spacious bathroom and access to a shared terrace.

All the staff were lovely, and the breakfast was lavish and delicious (there was even sparkling wine!).

It was a real privilege to stay in such atmospheric and architecturally (as well as historically) interesting surroundings ... and for a really good price! My only regret is that I never got round to spending some time in the bar/drawing room, which was lovely and had an excellent selection of reading material, always a big bonus in a hotel.

At the very top of the town, the Convento Dos Loios offers open views to the whole Evora and then plenty of charm, beauty and almost a magic appeal to the centuries past. The old convent was a gem, one of those rarer, rich monasteries with vast spaces, palatial stairs, corridors, high arches, long corridors, hidden niches inside and outdoor to retreat, meditate. All modern amenities are available, a lovely swimming pool, attention to each detail, while maintains a feel of austerity, almost a yoga inspiring atmosphere.

The restaurant is elegant, formal with impeccable service, good choices food and wine. Same staff at breakfast are helpful, very pleasant, an asset to a 5 star institution.

Our room was lovely, with view to the cathedral, a white colour scheme, clean and we felt like a rich nun and a lucky monk. A truly great place!

interesting accommodations. This was an old Monastery and the assigned rooms were cells once used by the Monks. Beds were extremely hard and uncomfortable. Our cell was a spacious suite, food was great and the surrounding area was beautiful. Great place to stay and dine.

The church stands a couple of doors away and serves as the pantheon for the founding de Melo family. The azulejos from 1711 are breathtaking. This church is not to be missed.

Traveling in Portugal and Spain one has the opportunity to stay in the paradores and pasadas. The governments of Iberia have taken these older properties, upgraded them for the modern traveler and allow stays where others who came before were living/working/worshiping!! This convent is one of these properties and staying there allows the visitor to think back to what it would have been like when it was a convent. While not a 5 star property ot has the benefit of allowing one to experience the past and imagine. If you like to "imagine" what things were like in the past, then this is one of the properties you'd enjoy. If you want every amenity, then better look for one of the "cookie-cutter" properties!!

It used to be an iconic hotel and restaurant, now apparently frozen in time. Due to its central location, good to have a coffee or a cold drink before meandering away

The church dos Loios is small and very beautiful. It is mostly covered of azulejos on the walls. This is definitely worth the visit.

This is another place where one must visit, not just for religious reason but definitely for structural beauty and decorated tiles of wonders. Still in display bones about royal cemetery of privilaged promise inside church.

If you are lucky enough to stay here you will be adjacent to the Temple of Diana, the Cathedral and the Diana garden. I recommend strolling in and taking a look around. As long as you walk with purpose and don't seem overtly touristy, no one will approach you. If they do, just say that you are there to meet a guest for a drink.
