About
CARTUXA WINE TOURISM The Cartuxa winery at Quinta de Valbom is an icon of the wine heritage of Alentejo. Fifteen hectares of organic vines surround this century-old premises where emblematic brands like Cartuxa and Pera-Manca age to perfection. This is where the Cartuxa Wine Tourism is located too, just 10 minutes away from Evora city centre. We will be delighted to welcome you and show you the history of the place, the wine-making throughout time, and challenge your senses with a wine and olive oil tasting. Both wines and olive oil, as well as the cured meats of our own Alentejo black pigs, can be purchased at our store. Guided tours are by appointment only.

We visited here today and were really disappointed. We accidentally booked a tour in Portuguese (it wasn’t clear in the website, but nonetheless totally our fault). When we asked the tour guide about a tour in English, she deeply rolled her eyes and said such a thing doesn’t exist. She then showed a video and we asked for English subtitles, which she put on, but very begrudgingly (it involved pushing one button on an iPad). Luckily, my partner speaks PT and tried to quietly translate for me the rest of the tour - once again, the guide immediately stopped and asked us to stop translating, even though other guests were constantly interrupting her. Let me be clear- we came to Portugal, and understand that not everyone speaks English. However, the reaction we received when inquiring about an English option was very, very inhospitable. This is a major tourist attraction; we did not knock on a stranger’s door demanding they speak our language. There are so many options in this region… we highly suggest picking somewhere else.

On the recommendation of our excellent hotel in Evora we went there to buy their olive oil. When we arrived in their shop which to be honest is beautifully decorated, there were 3 employees cht-chatting together, no clients. When we asked to taste their olive oil we got the following answer "you can only taste it if you take our tour. Good bye and thank you".
I truly wonder what the owner pays these 3 employees for.
In Portugal where everybody is so kind and welcoming, a dreadful chage.

Terrible experience! (June 2024) BE AWARE they use false advertisement in the website and they DON’T sell the Pera Manca Tinto here even if you do the tour and tasting. It was the worst tour/tasting in Portugal and had so far. A lot of wines and all olive oils out of stock. The guide in really unfortunate way suggest us to go to a El Corte ingles to buy products they didn’t have at Cartuxa. Tour consisted in a quick explanation of the Quinta and a video you can find at YouTube, it was a shame.

Also, BE AWARE if you live in the US, they sell the wines here more expensive than buying in the US, 100% tourist trap.

I want to congratulate Cartuxa crew for losing a fan, because I came to this tour excited by their advertisement and for wines I tasted before, and I left the Quinta with the feeling they trick tourists to come here to sell wines more expensive than outside of the county and with a pathetic and really pour tour.

What a super experience!
Personal tour (because of Covid) made this extra special.
Our guide Sérgio explained the history of the foundation and vineyard and was excellent company on our tour and during the wine and olive oil tasting.
The choice of wines and the olive oils were all delicious.
This is a beautiful and ethical vineyard and worth every penny.
Great value.

once the reservation was confirmed, everything went smoothly. Our guide led us through the history of the Eugênio Almeida family, the beginning of the vineyards and finally the installation of the foundation. We discover ancient ways of making wine. The tasting of 6 different wines was the highlight of the visit to the foundation.

Very nice tour with an explanation of Cartuxa history and wines. I have really enjoyed the senses room, where we were able to identify the different flavors that are present in the wines. At the end of the tour we were able to taste Cartuxa wines and some varieties of olive oils. It was an amazing experience, we recommend!

Amazing story, amazing wine and an incredible sensory trip and general atmosphere. The best was experiencing the key scents of the grapes used in their wine just like they were perfume. So worth the visit 💚

I'm a tour guide and unfortunately, I've been to this winery a couple times.
Every time I went there I promised myself that I'd not return and every time I gave them a 2nd chance, I regretted.
It's probably the winery with the most expensive tastings and tours in the region, yet they do little more than making you watch videos.
During the video the guide leaves the room to prepare the tasting. Last week someone had a coff attack and needed some water... I had to run around for good 5min before I could find someone and get water. No apologies though.
Also this time, I brought them 8clients (meaning 80€) for a 3wines tasting but when I dared to ask to sip one of the wines as it was new in the market, the answer was clear - NO.
Also, please do not dare to ask questions or you'll get "the look".

We walked to the winery for a morning tasting and tour. Some people didn't turn up so we were a group of four. Our guide was knowlegable and the tour was informative. The wine tasting was professional and interesting - we tasted 5 wines - and there was no pressure to buy and we had a relaxing time. The setting is beautiful.

The whole place is magical, the wine and olive oil were out of this world. We were truly treated as royalty. Honestly one of the best experiences I have had. A truly enjoyable place. I would highly recommend it 10/10

Many thanks
