We drove 3km along a dirt road full of holes to find the fenced space and had to observe the menhirs in the distance.
They should have had this information at the beginning of the journey to avoid such an unpleasant surprise. The route is not recommended for low cars, as it is in poor condition. Only for jeeps.

The historical interest is fabulous, 7000 years of history is fantastic.
The access is very bad, how is it possible for those entitled to not pay attention to the status of this access. At the site they ask not to touch the stones so as not to damage them, I take the opportunity to ask that the access points be improved so that visitors' cars are not damaged.

The dirt road remains bumpy. After traveling the three kilometers between the menhir and the cromlech it was found that it was not possible to visit. It was closed for works for six months. All good. But couldn't they have posted the warning three kilometers earlier? And six months from when? It didn't have any date. Deplorable!

A return to the distant past......
For anyone interested in prehistory, history or just curious, it is an excellent experience to make this visit.
Take advantage and also pay a visit to the Almendres menhir, it is on the way to the cromlech.
Negative point, the cromlech, is fenced and you can only partially appreciate it through the fence, a shame....Due to works, which have been going on for over a year.... Portugal at its best!! !!
Pay attention to the road, as it is dirt and has lots of holes, which is excellent for breaking your car's suspension if you don't drive very slowly!!! 🤣
The ideal and even advisable is to walk 😊 and it is worth the walk of around 10 km (round trip).
Before you go, stroll through the interpretive center for useful information.

The star given has nothing to do with the monument, but rather with access and the fact that it is closed to visitors. The worst thing is the access via a dirt "road" that looks like a lunar landscape with so many craters, unacceptable. Never coming back.

We stopped at the interpretation center, they told us how to get there. A few kms, 27 minutes to travel. Full of potholes to avoid, amazing. And the surprise is that it is fenced. You cannot walk through the cromlech. Disappointment.
There is an area to park and walk a few meters. They have made a mound to see everything from above. But....

Created between 6,000 and 3,000 BC, the site was not discovered until 1964, when mapping work was being done for the Geological Map of Portugal, as it was overgrown with vegetation. In comparison, Stonehenge is believed to have been constructed between 3000 BC to 2000 BC, so this is a very old site indeed. It is located near in village of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe, a few kilometres east of Évora. To reach it, it is necessary to drive about 4 Kms along a dirt track to the car park and then walk 150 metres to the site.

Over 200 stones that were constructed similar to many sites world-wide including Stonehenge. Take a detour if you driving to or past Evora and enjoy the energy of our ancestors.

Visited in mid-March 2024, and loved it. If you read previous reviews, everyone warns you about the road leading up to the Cromeleque dos Almendres. They are NOT exaggerating! The potholes are unlike anything I have encountered before, and I live in Michigan (USA) which is known for its terrible roads.

This site is super cool. Like others have suggested, I strongly advise anyone to stop at the Interpretive Center first. Not so much for the center itself (which is OK) - but to read the 6 or so large informative boards next to it. Note that there is information on both sides - some about the cork trees, the people who lived in the area, local history, flora and fauna, and of course the Cromeleque dos Almendress. Just enough info to feel like you're not going in totally blind.

Then proceed gingerly up the dirt road. My advice is to park just around the bend, in the first area set aside for the one large Menhir (which I did not visit), and then walk the rest- the second half of the road is much worse than the first. But if you are brave, you can drive almost up to the Cromeleque. I had a small SUV, and was glad for it.

As noted, you drive through olive and cork groves, and apparently, during certain parts of th year there are pigs also (not in March). The cork groves are pretty cool.

Once at the Cromeleque, definitely walk up the slight hill, so you overlook the stones a bit from above. When I did that, I suddenly felt like I understood why that site was chosen. I was there in early Spring, and there were only a handful of people there. It was pretty magical.

Construction made it inaccessible. Drive a few KM on dirt roads, park, walk another parallel dirt road for another few hundred meters, see the ancient tractor from the Neolithic period in action. Don’t bother until the work is done.
