At the very center of Évora's historic quarter, you will find "Praça do Giraldo" - a beautiful square dating from the 16th century. It is named after D. Geraldo Geraldes, a Portuguese hero, responsible for the conquest of Évora, in 1167, from the Moors. He was later appointed as Governor of Évora and named "Protector of the Borders of the Alentejo Region". Stroll slowly along the cobblestone esplanade, enjoy the beautiful neoclassic and romantic facades of its arched buildings, the cozy cafés, restaurants, souvenir shops and boutiques. On its sides, the famous "Igreja de Santo Antão" and the local branch of "Banco de Portugal". At its center, a baroque marbled fountain - the "Chafariz da Praça do Giraldo". And remember, "Praça do Giraldo" is, since 1910, a "Portuguese National Monument"! Enjoy!

While to say that all roads lead to Praca do Giraldo would be false, it is certainly the heart of the city. The central business district and shops lead off it, and the Cathedral, Chapel of Bones and other sites are a short walk away. The square has many cafés with many of them having tables and chairs in the centre of the square, with waiter service. The main tourist information office is situated in the square.

Upon arriving in Evora, my wife and I first stopped at the main square, better known as Praça do Giraldo. This is a spacious square that has restaurants, cafes, small shops and a variety of stores. We arrived on a Sunday, so several of the smaller stores were closed. However, many were opened and several restaurants, cafes and bakeries were open. There are a couple of larger restaurants right in the square with generous seating directly in the square. However, there are so many other smaller cafes with Portuguese specialties located along the side streets outside of the square. My wife and I enjoyed a delicious snack of the iconic Portuguese pastry, pasteis de nata, at a cozy bakery not far from the square.

When visiting Evora, the Praça do Giraldo is a great place to start your exploration and start to savor all that Evora has to offer.

Cool fountain in the central area of Évora. Cool little fountain but nothing spectacular. It is in the middle of a nice little area surrounded by shops and restaurants. Probably bustling during the summer months but pretty chill during off season. Worth walking by for a quick photo

A very active part of the central Evora. You can shop around this area, stop at the tourist info office and have a cup of coffee. A great place to sit and watch the world go by.

Located on the town square. Lots of shops, cafe and restaurants. It is nice to walk around or enjoy coffee or Portugal tarts.

This rectangular square, full of cafés, definitely has an atmosphere left from long gone centuries! On one end of it is the church of Santo Antão, with a beautiful fountain in front of it. On the opposite end is the building of Banco de Portugal. The shops on the north-eastern side are tucked behind the series of arcades.

Giraldo is the main square in Evora. While it's not like those in other bigger cities it's charming in its own right.

Great little square for the wonderful village of Evora. In the daytime, there were people wandering left and right between stores in the heat. At night, there was a competition of the chess federation of Portugal with about 30 players face to face. Later, the town hosted a free concert of Islamic music from international women singers.

Good for people watching and coffee sipping. Also, suggest trying the local pastries. Easy to find. Not crowded.
