About
The walls and pillars of the chapel, built in the century XVII, are lined with thousands of human bones and skulls. Ceilings with murals realtivas death. Written on a plaque next to the door, the phrase "We bones that are here for your hope", reminds us how fleeting passage through life.

- Paul SLondon, United Kingdom52 contributionsWell with the effort to stop and onsetThis is a must see. An interesting large church with an ossuary in a separate building next door. The chapel is an unusual sight for us in the 21st century when we are not inclined to think of the “ last things”. Others did and we are invited to think here too. The church museum is also a glorious place and worth the entrance fee(€6) A very interesting private collection of Nativity scenes perpetuating the tradition of the Franciscan devotion to the Incarnation.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten September 22, 2023
- EC13091Ellicott City, Maryland1,540 contributionsQuirky chapelWe have been in other bone chapels, but this was the best preserved. It’s sad that all the old cemeteries had to be dug up, but in this way, the chapel preserves those remains and reminds us all that we are dust and to dust we shall return. The admission ticket comes with admission to the museum, which has an interesting collection of nativity scenes.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 3, 2023

Took the train from Lisbon. Highly recommend. Loved walking around the town and the Chapel of Bones was one of the highlights of the trip.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 15, 2023
- liverpool1023London, United Kingdom1,176 contributionsMomento MoriJust what you need on a Sunday morning is a sobering visit to an ossory. The message over the entrance is the rather mordant - we bones that are here await yours. The chapel was created in the 17th century from the remains of 5,000 monks. The ceiling is nicely frescoed and there is a fine alter piece.Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 5, 2024
- Pietro JToronto, Canada362 contributionsA worth while visit to Evora for the St Francis complex, ossuary, town and temple. Not a large chapel for the bones but very unusual and striking. The St Francis complex is worth a visit with the church, and exhibits of interest. The city wall is restored to perfection and the town in worth a long walk. The roman temple is in a good setting but largely destroyed.Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten April 16, 2024
- kjan2253Toronto, Canada117 contributionsBones and MuralsI had read about this chapel in the tourist guide books and could not imagine over 5,000 bones in a room. As a tourist from Canada, it is hard to believe that the cemeteries got so full, that skeletons would be exhumed and moved to make way for the newly dead. There are lovely painted ceilings in the chapel which contrast with the skulls, leg, and arm bones. You really do need to see it to believe it.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 31, 2024
- hali-in-cuba64404 contributionsYou might never see this aginThis was the reason we stayed in Evora...my husband wanted to see this. It was like nothing I have ever seen before and probably never again. I did find the price of admission a bit much as it doesn't take that long to see it all...along with all the nativity sets.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 31, 2024

We're becoming Ossuary aficionados. The first one we ever saw was in Kutna Hora CZ. Whoa. That's the one that's hard to beat. We missed the one in Brno., So we made a point of seeing this. Now I didn't tell my wife about the one in Kutna Hora until we entered it and the look on her face was priceless. Same with this.
This is impressive in its own way. Not quite as "artistic" as Kutna Hora, but humbling and almost overwhelming. It was about 10euro to get in, and frankly we rarely pay for stuff on our trips, like castles or museums. Just seen enough of them. BUt I gladly forked over the euro for this. The cathedral it is attached to isn't too bad itself and there are a few other displays (see pictures) within the chapel that are worth viewing. If you are in Evora, which I recommend, this is a must see.

Really unique and powerful venue with a rich story and symbolism. I would recommend doing this as part of a tour though as the message and symbolism is not something that as obvious without an expert explaining it. We were able to eavesdrop on someone else's tour to better appreciate everything we were seeing. It would be good for the venue to provide an audio tour for visitors to better appreciate what you're seeing. Still a 'must see' while in Evora.

This place is more than mildly disturbing. Yes, I understand the intended message of how time waits for no one, and dust to dust, etc. But the real story of this place is a more telling tale of the human experience. These bones came to adorn the interior of this church when the only available real estate in the old, walled city was the local cemetery. So they dug up like 5000 human remains, moved them in and pasted them to the walls of this holy site, then they called in the surveyors. You may find it a spiritual experience, I found it creepy, and par for the human course.

The chapel is very impressive. Worth to take time there, but truth be told is a bit creepy. Apparently it was constructed out of necessity because the graveyards in Evora were overcrowded. So bones were exhumed and placed in this place of worship.
Outside the church go up to the 1st floor to see various religious artifacts, paintings and history of its evolution in Evora.
The last floor guides you to a lovely view of Evora. After you click a few pics, go see the nativity exhibit from around the world. Some are divine others are just… alternative. Same goes with the nativity plates. Some clearly are made from devoted craftsmen others seem to be experimental. My family and I had fun trying to guess where the nativities came from. The QR code in the wall made it easy to find the origin and creator.
bathrooms are very clean and staff is very friendly. many postcards and religious items at the shop. Before going out to the street there is a commemorative coin dispenser cost €2.
Don’t forget to visit San Francisco Church (next door).

Located almost in the center of Old Town Evora, the Gothic church, cloister and “Chapel of the Bone” was built by the Franciscan Monks back in the 14th Century. Visiting the church is free, but the Chapel of the Bones is about 3 Euros.
The Chapel of The Bones is what most people come to see. I overlooked telling my wife what this chapel was about. To say the least, she quickly walked out and was not happy with me. There are at least 5000 bones of various Evora people buried in the walls. This was the Medieval Age when mysticism was still rampant. It was actually the work of three monks who spent years collecting and cementing all these bones in the chapel.
All these bones were to help you meditate and ponder about accumulating the material life of wealth and pleasure. It was to make you think that life surely was going to end one of these days. There is a saying (in Portuguese) on top of the doorway as you enter, “We bones in here wait for yours to join us.”
Ironically, the three monks who put all this together are buried in a white coffin by the Chapels alter.
Taking all the photos that you want without flash was no problem.
We also found the Evora Cathedral a pleasure to visit. We liked going to the top and seeing a majestic views of Evora. The only downside was that their museum, unlike St. Francis, did not allow you to take pictures.

At the historic center of Évora, next to the famous "Igreja de São Francisco", stands "Capela dos Ossos" - literally "Chapel of Bones", in English. Dating from the 17th century, with clear Gothic influences, it is an example of the rare "penance architecture". Inside, skulls and bones of more than 5,000 corpses were exhumed to decorate, in different patterns, its walls and ceilings. At the chapel's entrance, an inscription - "Nós ossos que aqui estamos, pelos vossos esperamos" (meaning something like "We, the bones, wait for your own bones") - enhances the gloomy, somber and sorrowful atmosphere, bringing reflections on the transience and fragility of human life. It is much more a curiosity than a tourist attraction. Don't bring your children! Anyway, enjoy!

The chapel is not that awesome, was expecting a bit more, also felt was a bit overpriced for what was visible.
The nativity scene collection was beautiful and it has a terrace with a view.
The girl at the entrance was not friendly, my friend even joked that if we paid a euro more we would get some niceness...

Fica distante do Centro? Como se chega? Obrigada

Fica relativamente perto. Depois de estacionar, aconselho fora das muralha, basta seguir as indicações.

Is this attraction in the little town of Évora or just outside the town like it shows on the map? We drove out to the location that is shown on the map and couldn’t find it. Someone in a store close to where we drove to, told us that it’s actually in the town? We were kind of disappointed because we really wanted to check it out!
Written June 26, 2018
Within the town. Few blocks off town center. Worth trying to see if you get chance. Closes promptly at 5 pm

Are tickets sold at the door of the church? This is my first visit to Evora, and will only be there for a few hours. What other sites or dining is recommended?
Written April 4, 2018
Tickets are sold at the door. It is a small town with cute shops and restaurants. Go off the main plaza and you will find good food. Look for the remains of the Roman Aqueduct as well.

Hi--what are lineups and wait times like at Ossos? Albeit I will be there high time in August, I am wondering how to plan my arrival time in Evora. Also, can I purchase tickets online ahead of time? Thank you!

I’m sorry but I was there in June and didn’t need to line up, but I’m sure you can buy the tickets in adwance!
