A long ride up a poorly maintained dirt road and then a muddy walk. Fencing has been erected around the stones so getting a view really isn’t possible. Stone Henge it isn’t. Not sure it’s worth the time unless you really want to see 4000 year old stones.

Great day trip from Evora. This was such a unique and fun experience. This Neolithic heritage site (approximately 6000 BC) was quite a site to behold. It’s located off the beaten track in a cork forest. The folks at the visitor center were kind and informative. Don’t miss this if you are in Evora. Great place for a bike ride and picnic.

We loved the Almendres Cromlech and considered it a highly worthwhile trip. However, on our way out we discovered that someone had broken into our locked car and stolen almost everything. We were visiting the site on our way out of Evora, so our suitcases were all in the trunk. The parking lot is just far enough away from the site that you cannot keep an eye on the car. We were only gone for about 20 minutes and we appeared to be alone. When we reported everything to the police they said they were having a regular problem with that site. However, there is no sign to warn visitors and our hotel in Evora was unaware of the problem. According to the police and from our own experience the thefts are not targeting people, only unattended cars. If you're headed out here, either leave someone with your car or leave all your belongings back at the hotel.

If you have any interest in archeology it’s worthwhile going here to see these 95 standing stones in a circle arranged for astronomical observations of the solstices. I recommend going with Ebora Megalithica which is owned and run by archeologist Mario Carvalho who is a fountain of knowledge and will answer any questions you may have. He also speaks English very well. He has a van and driver and they pick up and drop you at your hotel. They also bring you to two nearby sites- one a big standing stone and the other a dolmen (burial site). They go twice a day with a maximum of seven each time (nice small group).
The cork trees surrounding the sites are also interesting to see.

A visit to the megalithic sites in the Evora area was right at the top of my list of things to do in my three weeks in Portugal. Like a number of other people posting here, I would highly recommend hiring (at very reasonable rates) a guide--in my case the very knowledgeable and friendly Mario Carvalho of Ebora Megalithica. It really makes a world of difference to have a local archeologist on hand to explain the history and cultural significance of the sites. And they'll worry about the driving for you as well.
The site was astonishing to me. From about 5500 BC. Mind boggling to stand on the same ground as the people who erected these stones. Being in among the stones and Mario's detailed explanations were a trip back through time. Unforgettable. And hugely recommended.

Went on a trip booked in Evora that was advertised via a leaflet found in the Hotel. It was an escorted tour in a mini bus which picked us up from our hotel and took us there and back during the morning. An interesting, extremely well educated young man, Mario, explained everything about these megaliths covering 3 different sites. If we had driven there ourselves we would not have understood 75% of the things we saw. We couldn't understand why the local tourist office had no information about what we found to be the most interesting sights we saw in Evora, and the city has lots to offer. The cost of the tour was 25 euros each and was worth every cent. Don't miss it!

Not too far from Évora, this fantastic place shows some 90 granite stones, placed on a slope facing the sunrise over the Serra de Monfurado. They date back 6000 to 3000 years BC and were used for social or religious rituals. We always like to visit such sites, because of their value as cultural monuments. There is always a special atmosphere surrounding these tall stones with meanings that we haven't fathomed till now.
We think this site should be part of UNESCO's Cultural World Heritage, since it is really unique and only is a par with Stonehenge in England, the Alignements in Carnac/Bretagne (France) or some sites on Malta and Gozo. It urgently needs to be protected, since almost all vegetation has disappeared from between the stones and you can see how the soil is washed away by rainy spells in the local climate. The information panel at the parking asks visitors to follow the path that circles the site and not to go near the menhirs or touch them, but there is no protection, nor any supervision. We hope our comment will help to stimulate the authorities to act and take the necessary measures to protect this site and at the same time develop research into its history and significance.
It also requires a basic touristic infrastructure which can guarantee the protection of the site.
Two kilometres nearer to Guadelupe, there is a big, single menhir.

Cromeleque dos Almendres is a pre-historic, celtic stone ritual site in the vicinity of Guadalupe, near Evora, Portugal. The site rivals Stonehendge, England in size, complexity, and age. It is firm documentation of Celtic settlement long before Roman conquest. The site is down a long dirt road throught the countryside, and has adequate directional signage from the main roads. The area is clearly visible and open for touring. On-site interpretation and description is sketchy. It appears that the 90+ standing stones had some sort of ritualistic meaning, perhaps a calendar, a religious center, or a burial site. It is eerie to stand in the site, in the middle of pastoral counryside, and think about what could have happened there. A self-guided tour will enable you to see the site, but a tour guided event from nearby Evora may offer more information. Also in Evora at the Municipal Building Praca is an inscribed display stone from the same period. A good place to see.

The interpretive center is located along the road towards the Almendres Cromlech. Look for the cork covered building on the right side of the road. A car park is located adjacent to the building.
Inside the building are souvenirs and other items for sale about Portugal and more specifically the Cromlech. The staff here are a font of knowledge about the history and structures of the area.
Outside on the grounds there is an information nature trail with signage detailing some of the flora and fauna of the area along with all the wonders to see in the area. There is also a small picnic area and a replica ancient village.
Worth stopping prior to visiting the Cromlech.

Puede que esos días cierre el Centro de Interpretación y la tienda. Puedes visitar el cromlech y el menhir sin problema, pues no hay ningún tipo de barrera que impida el acceso. Merece la pena la visita.

Hi,where did you found your guide? In Evora?Did you found him by the hotel? Thanks

We also had a rental car to reach the site, otherwise you would need a guide service which you can book through your hotel.

Hello! Can I get there by bike from Evora? Is it dangerous to go there by bike?
Written September 15, 2017
Hello. The site is a few miles outside the city. But not too far away. I think, with due caution, it is also possible to get on a bike.

We will be renting a car and driving around Portugal for 2 weeks and staying in Evora for 2 nights.
From what I have been reading, It appears roads to this sight are very rough. Are there tours or other modes of transportation to get there?
Written May 24, 2016
We visited the site with a very competent guide. He picked us up with a driver at our hotel along with a few other persons coming from other hotels. He knows the way and the site being an archeologist himself.
The name of his small company: Ebora Megalithica Guided tours,
His name: Mário Carvalho

There is also a website under eboramegalithica.
Have a nice visit

What is the best way to get there from Evora by a public transport?
Are there any special tour buses or anything like that?
Written February 9, 2016
No public transport, and it's well off the beaten track. We had our own car, but car hire is cheap in Portugal (if you don't do it through an hotel) - probably less than a taxi. Well worth the trek, however you get there. We saw some bike rentals in Evora, but there's nowhere secure at the stones; you'd have to chain it to a tree.

Boa visita
