As we did a very wide tour of the old city of Elvas, we arrived to the area of the Pelourinho, and it is an interesting site as it is in every portuguese town, where the site represented where the authorities declared guilty to people or was the site of announcing measures to the inhabitants of the town, the church in front of it is worth visiting.

The center attraction in Largo de Santa Clara is this sixteenth-century "pelourinho." We took photos of the monument as the architects designed a sculptural intrigue, and it is wonderful. The vertical column is not circular, but has a variety of shapes until the top portion which houses the four metal "hanging stations." At the tip ends of these metal stations, ominous shapes preview bad things are going to occur to folks who end-up, strung-up, therein. Generally, the surrounding plaza is wonderfully bright and cheery. Great contrast here by design????

On the other side of the street when you are in front of the Igreja das Domenicas, you can see the “Pelourinho”, or the Elva’s Pillory who is one of the symbolic monuments of this lovely historical town in the vast Alentejo town.

According to some researches, this Pillory was originally from the close by Ouguela department, with a markedly Manu line style.

Its basis is settled in a five step pedestal with a polygonal shape. The column is decorated with semi-spheres, and even nowadays the subjection chains, possibly from the 16th century.

We have already been to many historical places, but this may be the first time for us to see a single pillory.
It turns out that another artistic one in Manuel style.

The pelourinho, pillory in Spanish, where the bodies or heads of the executed were exposed, is present in almost all the towns we have visited in the Alentejo. Always as a monument of the place.

In this case, in the Largo de Sta Clara or the Largo del Pelourinho, it has on one side the charming octagonal church with yellow and blue tiles and, on the other, the Porta de Alcaçova, of Arab origin.
