I really hate to write this review but here goes. I am sure some will not agree. This place is needy in many respects. It is dirty, unkept, shoddy etc. The military museum has a few interesting things but most of the stuff on display is junk/radios, dental equipment etc. Give me a break. The fort is really austere and basic, there are many other military structures worth your time and effort compared to this place. The only highlight is the aqueduct which is a drive by; it is very impressive. The whole place is very austere and down right depressing.

Something any student of military history should visit. The very well preserved fortifications deservedly resulted in Elvas being designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Drove from Madrid to Portugal and diverted to Elvas.
Parking smack in the middle under the town square!

What an amazing town! magnificently restored and yet in keeping with the history of the place....from ancient Rooms to the Templars defeating the Moors and Christian fighting for many centuries...all laid out in the many stages of the embankments and walls with turrets still intact.
The old castle is excellent and cheap at E2 (use oldies) or E4 for adults!
Amazing to read the history on the great triangular story units in 3 languages (Portugese, Spanish and English).
The little narrow streets are beautiful and the buildings show all the different stages of development over some 14 centuries.
From the top of the castle keep the 360 degree view is spectacular. All the differrent revetments are clear and the adjacent castle is obvious and accesible too.

This is one spot NOT to miss if travelling between Madrid and Lisbon!

We spent 4 hours just wandering around it and still only saw about 50%!

Beautiful aqueduct with 4 stories high in the entrance to this city welcomes the traveler. After that go and explore the unique fortification with the zig-zag shape all around the old city. These 2 sites gave Elvas the title of World Heritage site of UNESCO.

We made the mistake of visiting on a public holiday so everything was closed which was our mistake. There was a second hand market in the main square selling things from old houses which was intersting and you could pick up some bargains. The square itself is beautiful, a decorative marble cobble in black and white which looks fantastic. There's a photography museum but check for opening times, most things close for lunch. Interesting entrance to this walled town and worth wandering the streets with some great views from the top.

The museum is located in the town historic centre, the building was in times an hospital. The exposition quite interesting with some very good pieces. In the end of the visit don't forget to go to the cafeteria on the top floor, there you can have amazing views of the old part of the city wiith it's typical whitewashed houses in narrow streets some dating back from moorish times .

I find that Portugal has a tremendous amount of sights on offer which are not generally advertised. We had a day trip today to visit this's wonderful Fortress Town. We visited the castle in the old quarter, which is well preserved and offers fabulous all round views of the surrounding area ( free entry today) , The fortress of Santa Luzia, also restored ( and had the informative tour of the Musem 2 Euro entry fee) and saw the fabulous Aqueduct, an amazing sight in itself. The Fort of Graca is currently undergoing massive restoration project and is closed to the public but it will be really be something to see when completed. There are other sights to be explored which I was unable to enjoy but hopefully I shall return.

Of all the nice places in Alentejo we enjoyed Elvas the most. Not too bif, you can see al the cites in a few hours, especially if you circle the town and the walls, to check the fortresses and the aquaduct.
