I have awesome memories of Hawksnest Ski Resort as a kid and the remanence of the trails still exists but go unused. Now a tubing park, there is still fun to be had.
Reservations online are the way to go and be sure to knock those waivers out before you arrive. I don't know if walk up availability is even an option. When booking you are paying for a specific two hour time-slot (actually about 1:45 of tubing time). It is encouraged to arrive thirty minutes prior to your appointed time which was way more than enough time. Slots sale out fast, especially on weekends. Once you arrive, find a parking spot, change into whatever you want to tube in (ski pants and raincoat are recommended) and walk up to get your tickets. Then a short wait in line for the previously time slot folks to clear and off you go.

There are four or five "runs" that sort of feed into each other. None seem too extreme but that is VERY dependent on the quality of the snow. Warmer days bring slower slush, colder days bring icy speed.

We went on a warmer day with teenage boys that thought it was "too slow". I know this was solely because of the slush and nothing to do with the park but the boys were bored after about an hour.

Living in Florida, we try to make a winter "snow vacation" annually. This year brought us to North Carolina where there were multiple opportunities. Since we do not ski or snowboard, snow tubing is our thing.

We planned to visit Hawksnest midweek to avoid the weekend crowds, especially since they often sell out their limited time slots. Weather is also a factor especially late in the season. If planning a trip we recommend checking their website often for availability. Note that there are no refunds so plan accordingly when you reserve and book on-line.

Reserving and booking was easy once we selected our day and time. There is a check block for Military discount of $3 off but that function did not appear to work for us.

We arrived a little early for our scheduled 12pm launch. Check in was quick and easy. We were issued our passes and told were to line up. In the meantime we explored the small gift shop and watched the 10am tubers finish up their runs.

Hawksnest has four tubing runs but we only used the taller, longer run on the far left of the park. Another run is considered the "Family" lanes which is shorter and less steep and intended for children. Two runs in the rear of the park did not seem to be used much.

At our time, we were admitted and issued a tube. Headed off to the slope. Early on the runs were fun and fast but as time wore on the surface became softer which slowed the run down especially near the bottom of the hill. Recommend going for the 10am run for the fastest conditions.

We managed something jus under 10 runs in our allotted 1 hour 45 minutes time. As the run is long and the Magic Carpet equally long, it takes several minutes to return to the top of the slope.

All in all we had a great time and will return again when in the region. Dress warm and appropriately for the windy mountain weather. Note also that presently due to COVID restrictions the cafe is closed and no food or drink is available weekdays. There may be food truck availability during weekends.

One of the prettiest zip line courses I have experienced. Some very long and fast runs with great views. Our guides, Lauren & Walker were excellent. They really made the experience fun for everyone. Despite being a larger group of 12 they really kept things moving, explaining each line and how to approach it. Both were lovely, kind, charismatic and above all, super professional. Would absolutely return and recommend!

I'm from CT and my wife is from Maine originally (we now live in Charlotte) so we have higher standards than most when it comes to snow. I found that the line for the one big tubing hill was very long (probably about 15 min or so each time) and while the rest were quicker waits, they also weren't very long and had walks in between each hill as you went onto the next one.

Would highly recommend tying tubes together, you go much faster. My 7 year old did the big hill first by himself and got stuck halfway down.

Also disappointing that the tubing ends 15 minutes before your scheduled 2 hours is up to allow for the next window of people.

Allow me to share my story...
I purchase a gift certificate to Hawksnest for somebody who lives four hours away from Hawksnest for them in Christmas 2020. The gift certificate is "good" through the end of winter 2021.
They drive up the day before and spend their hard earned money on gas, lunch, dinners, breakfast, and a motel; not to mention vacation time away from work. When all was said & done they had close to $500 in this trip.
The next day they are on their way to Hawksnest for their tubing and Hawksnest calls 10 minutes before arrival saying that they are canceling their appointment due to inclement weather.
The folks drive four hours home and request a refund which should be a given since Hawksnest cancelled this trip (10 minutes beforehand mind you).
Hawksnest wrote back that it will not refund gift certificates because they can be used anytime during the season which would make a certain amount of sense if this was a walmart around the corner but it's not. This is a destination trip that requires vacation time, planning, and a hundreds of dollars of other expenditures.
The fact that Hawksnest defaulted on their portion of this purchase / commitment and will not refund the amount spent is as unethical as it gets.
I would not give this establishment another penny of my money; there are many other establishments out there that are much more deserving.
Of course their argument would be that they do not control the weather and these passes can be used at any time but that would show an utter disregard for the other time and expenditures put into this trip.

We went to Hawksnest for the first time this past February 2021. It definitely lived up to the hype you hear from others.

We made reservations in advance, which is highly recommended, so check in was relatively quick and easy. They moved through a lot of people at check in, so the line goes pretty quick considering the volume of people there. Once you check in, you get a tube and off you go.

They have 4 tubing hills, each with several lanes for tubers. Due to how they have several time slots and limit the number of people per slot, lines at each tubing lane go relatively quick. Maybe 5-10 minutes per hill. They have people movers like airports to take you back to the top of each hill so that helped a lot. In the 1hr 45min we had to tube, we were able to ride each of the 4 hills at least twice, some we rode 4 times. You definitely get your fill of riding in. They have staff at the top and bottom of each hill to maintain order and make sure nobody gets hurt.

Make reservations early, for time slots fill up FAST. We made reservations at the first time slot in the morning, 10am. The snow was freshly made and groomed, still cold, so it was fast.

Definitely going to go again. This will be a regular winter trip for the family now.

We had a GREAT time at Hawknest Snow Tubing during the last week of February. The weather was a little warm so the ice had turned to slush on 2 of 4 slopes. Luckily the 1000" slope was not impacted :) SO MUCH FUN and the guys running the slope were AWESOME, very focused on customer service!

Bathrooms left a little to be desired when we arrived from a long drive. We were the last session of the day and it looked like they had not been cleaned all day.

There is a bit of physical endurance needed to pull your tube around when trying to get to a magic carpet or to the start of the slope, but it is absolutely worth it all!

Everyone in the family had a great time! Take time to have your pictures taken, they are produced onsite, ready in minutes and very affordable.

My suggestions to the staff: Please keep the bathrooms open until all customers are finished. They closed promptly at 6pm while we were purchasing pictures. And there isn't a convenient roadside bathroom for many miles.

Also, keep the souvenir shop open until all customers leave. We didn't want to use tubing time to 'shop' and assumed that we could pick up a magnet or tshirt when we were leaving. We were nearly the last customers to leave and we pulled out of the parking lot at 6:15 so I really don't think that this request is unreasonable.

We went during the week and it was a little more crowded than expected, but if there were any lines, they went fast. Almost everyone was wearing a mask and it is easy to keep your distance. The staff was great - and very friendly. My husband and I are both in our 40's and we had so much fun - would recommend for all ages. Purchase tickets online in advance, especially on weekends as they have limited quantity and they do sell out fast.

Worst customer service. We bought tickets online and drove 6 hours to go tubing only to arrive and they decide to close. Nobody called or texted or emailed just sitting at the locked gate for 2 hours before we finally get through to someone who says "oh we decided to close today" - thanks for the heads up! I have called and left messages and no one has called me back. All they would have to do is proactively reach out to everyone who purchased tickets to let them know they won't be open, maybe even update the website that they are closed that day - something, anything - you run a business, treat your customers better!

This was our first trip snow tubing and we decided on Hawksnest because they have multiple runs. The cost is about the same as other places nearby and we were able to purchase the tickets online ahead of time.

We lucked out on the weather and there was real snow the day before and the weather was still cold when tubing. We were delayed in getting there a little because of road closures and icy conditions. I would recommend arriving a little early, because even with online tickets you still have to get the physical ones, park and change into your snow clothes. As soon as we had the physical tickets we grabbed and tube and were going downhill in less than a minute.

Our 7 yo was able to manage the tube and runs himself, but our 4 yo needed help. We tried going down with adult and child in separate tubes, held together, but decided that lap riding was better. Then we just put her back in the tube and dragged her to the next run.

The lines only backed up on the longest run. We had to wait 5-10 minutes. The 3 shorter runs never had lines longer than 3 or 4 tubers in front of us. Most of the time we would just get into an empty lane. Sometimes, we would wait for adjacent lanes, to race. I think we made 8-9 runs in the time we were there.

Ultimately, we had a great time and I would recommend Hawksnest tubing. It is a great place to introduce kids to snow. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we came back the next day and did it again.

Pro tips:

Give yourself extra travel time to arrive early; park, change and get physical ticket.
At the bottom of your run, watch out for careless tubers coming down.
Hold onto your stuff when you are on the magic carpet; gloves, tubes, phones, kids.
