About
The Park of Military History Pivka is a museum and experience center providing its visitors with a unique insight into the rich military and historical heritage of this strategically very important part of Slovenia. The Park hosts one of the biggest tank-artillery collection in this part of Europe. Aside from the tanks, field guns and other armored vehicles from the second half of the 20th century, we also put on display a collection of the military aircrafts together with the helicopter Gazelle T0-001 Velenje, which supplement the museum contents. Nevertheless, the most attractive exhibit piece for our visitors is still the sabotage submarine P-913 Zeta, since they can also see its interior and experience the secret world of the submariners. With its exhibition The Road to Independence, the Park of Military History was also the first to chronologically and systematicly display the process of gaining independence in the Republic of Slovenia and the break-up of the former Yugoslavia. This topic is also illustrated with the display of armored and other vehicles that participated in the Slovenian war for independence in 1991.

We were visiting the museum in August. Sadly, we had only 2 hours time, so we needed to hurry. You can go through the attractions in under 3 hours, but we recommend you take your time, because it's really worth it. Slovenia's fight for independence from all three totalitarian regimes is shown. We will definitely be visiting again. The Museum is conveniently located on the way to the Croatian seaside, so it can be a great stop while traveling there or back. A very nice restaurant is also located on the site. We highly recommend a visit and experience the military history of Slovenia and its people!

Not being a militant person I welcomed the initiative to visit this museum. Its content is as militaristic as well as historic, maybe even more so. I would recommend the visit of the submarine and the flight simulator. You have to schedule ahead. You will have the opportunity to get a glimpse of WWII and WWII as well as the immediate history artifacts. I strongly recommend the visit.

Museum/park is really nice. A lot of things to see if you are interested in military history.

I loved interactive part of slovenian independence history part of museum. Very nicely presented.

Had an opportunity to see a submarine from inside. Highly recomend, best to book it in advance.

Also had an opportunity to experience how to fly mig (3d simulator). If you have time book it and experience it.

2nd world war exhibition is also interesting.

My only minus is that opening hours are a little bit late - from 10 in summer season. Otherwise really good park/museum.

Great place to see, a few hour trip. A combination of world wars and a dissolution of Yugoslavia. I recommend also a launch in the restaurant.

I came with my son, who loves military museums.
This museum was very interesting, well organized.
Impressive collection of tanks, planes, arms, and telling the history of the Yugoslav and Slovenian army in in modern, interactive high standart exhibitions. Part of it in the renovated buildings of the former army base, and some in new a new buildings.
In the back part, more exhibition space is being prepared.
If you have time, you can spend several hours inside.
As far as I've seen, the place is wheelchair accessable.

We planned our yearly trip to the Balkans with visiting this museum on the way home. It was absolutely fantastic.

This museum houses tons of vehicles, arms and smaller displays not to mention an entire technical depot where you can find rows of machinery, computers and other things, but has an amazing way of guiding you trough the museum.

You can easily spend 5 hours here.
Too much to write, just go and look.

So much to see and do, my only regret is not having longer to visit.

I took my eldest son for a whirlwind tour of the museum at the end of a long day. My only complaint is that there was so many wonderfully put together and thoughtfully done displays and information, and I didn't have time to appreciate it all.

Where do you start. Well this place is a must for anybody with a passing interest to history or military. It also charts the flashpoints of the breakup of Yugoslavia and Slovenia's history. The museum goes back into pre-history and even has modern archery displayed within what is often just thought of as a military museum.

So many things to see, just see the photos in the other reviews for a flavour

I was surprised by the content of this museum on many levels.

Firstly - it has 3 "eras". Post-Stalin split (1950s) which is full of American and British machinery, Soviet-Yugoslav era (1960-1980s) with interesting details about lives of conscripts, cold war mentality with pro-Yugoslav propaganda/education, and the 10 day war of Slovenia independance (1990s). It's the second era which has the most exhibits and shows the role of military in the society in this period. The 10 day war is a bit problematic (problematic), but I guess Slovenes have to first come to agreement what happened and how.

Secondly - seems the whole museum is a great diplomacy tool for Slovenia and NATO relations. Many donated exhibits. Of course, it's better weapons are utilised this way, than in war.

Thirdly - the submarine. It's really a good way to experience both the technology of the era (1980s) and the mentality behind it (submarine was a secret Yugoslav project).

I didn't see the new building (just opened) and curious about the direction this museum will develop into. Hopefully more insight into society and culture behind the machinery.

I have been here a few years ago, and have been folowing all the upgrades done to this place on FB. As I was traveling trough Pivka anyway it would have been a shame not to go.
The work done is incredible. The whole complex has been tidied up, the staff is friendly and know a lot. The entire complex is wheelchair accesible, and guides are available.
My favourite part..? Tanks.. and lots of them..😁 WW2 tanks, mostly alied, but some Axis artillery pieces. They just restored an WW2 train - locomotive and cars.. An entire building is dedicated to the independence of Slovenia - with ex Yugoslav armour...T-55, BRDM, BOV, M84..No M55 sadly.. and they got a sub in there.😱
They also have events where they bring some of the tanks out..to be driven in front of the people..check on their webpage..
All in all..a great exhebition, at a reasonable price. If you are there..GO WISIT!!
P.S.Try the Struedel in the Kantina.. its heavenly😋

The park hosts some pretty rich collection of tanks and transporter vehicles and artillery. You can also see a P-913 submarine and 4 aircrafts. The exhibition named "Road to independance" is a story for itself. Even though I didn't personally live in the 1991 it was quite an emotional and interesting journey.
