I have visited this cemetery on probably ten occasions to visit the grave of my grandfather with my wife, son and grandchildren. iIt has always been very well looked after. As with all the First War cemeteries, you cannot believe the death and carnage of a hundred year's ago when you visit the area today. The only slight problem is to find the cemetery. I am only aware of one sign in the village. The cemetery itself is at the end of a narrow track between two houses.

We visited Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery outside Ypres, Belgium at the request of a couple from the UK that we met on a Disney Cruise who had a Great Uncle interred there from WWI. We told them we would be traveling there in April 2015, and they asked if we would visit and place some flowers on the grave of their Great Uncle Edwin Albert who was a machine gunner in the Great War. This cemetery is located in a farmer’s field and it seemed odd to have to walk through his backyard to reach it. But that is the case with so many of the British cemeteries that dot the countryside of Flanders. We found the grave and placed some poppies on it and gave him best regards from his Great-Nephew Michael who regretted that he was unable to visit himself. I have photos which I will add soon.

You can read more about this cemetery and others on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website: www.cwgc.org

We visited to say thank you to the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice. And a special "thank you" to Private William Birrell Stewart of the Yorkshire Regiment, my great great uncle. Lest we forget. A beautifully maintained peaceful cemetery.

During our recent visit to The Battlefields of Belgium in September we stopped off at Vlamertinghe on our way back to Calais. The weather was shocking as it was pouring down (real authentic Flemish weather) which made our visit all the more poignant.

You have to park in the layby on the road as access is down a very narrow track between two houses which offers no vehicular access. This is a large cemetery of some 1000 graves and Captain Francis Grenfell VC is buried here.

As with all CWGC Cemeteries this one is kept in immaculate condition.

This is a large cemetery with over 1000 headstones representing so much sacrifice by men who died nearby.
There are many stories attached to men in this Cemetery but the best known are that of Captain Francis Grenfell VC (The VC is emblazoned on his headstone) and conversely that of Private A Rickman who faced the firing squad having deserted in 1916 despite having fought through the Gallipoli campaign.

Happened to be in the region and on a whim googled my surname and came to find a member of my family were buried here in 1917 so we decided to do a small detour and visit.

What a beautiful cemetery, wonderfully kept (as they all are). Very peaceful, in fact it’s on top
of a farm so you have cows and sheep wondering around which is lovely. It‘a hidden away between two houses so can be easily missed.

It’s a very beautiful place to pay your respects to those lost.

Having been passed on details of my great uncle by my father, I was determined to visit his grave. Full details were supplied by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and it was easy to find the headstone. What was moving was not only the link with an ancestor who had given his life aged 24 but the number of others of similar ages who had died on or around the same date.

Beautifully kept and a tribute to the CWG who do such a great job in allowing us to pay our respects.
