Ypres is a lovely place to visit, wonderfully restored from the destruction of WW1. The square is simply lovely though a little full of tourists. The Market square is full of restaurants, bars and cafes but also houses the Flanders Fields Museum and the Tourist Office.
One criticism though, and this is of Ypres in general is that the parking restrictions and meters have only Flemish writing on them, have no French or English instructions available. Everything else in Ypres is in Flemish, French and English. The meters have evidently got 1 of 3 buttons to press depending on your residency status and then a keyboard to follow instructions (in Flemish). Totally incomprehensible. After receiving a €20 parking fine (all in Flemish) I learned from the Tourist Office that the answer is to park for free outside the inner restricted area (best is next to railway station). A tourist scam? You make the decision.

The place is beautiful and pleasant. I went to Christmas market that was happening there. A lot of tents with delicious food. Very good.

The market square has a lovely chocolate shop and some wonderful restaurants, unfortunately while we were there many active businesses were closed, we don’t know why they were closed on Monday,Tuesday, Wednesday, but if they were open, we would have definitely shopped in them! It is a lovely place, it was a shame that most places were closed.

Not good. Ypres has an identity crisis. Extremely loud music in the market square which could be heard some distance away from where we were staying - really really loud until 1am. Would not recommend staying in Ypres at all. Not what we expected from such an important historical location.

A beautiful walled fortress town. Ypres has a wonderfully peaceful moat around the town walls. The centre of town has a large market square which is bordered by the awesome Cloth Hall and many other fine buildings containing shops and restaurants. Stay at the fantastic Hortensia B&B a short walk from this fantastic market square.

Very disappointing. We have been to Ypres several times for remembrance. Last year when we left we saw the Christmas market setting up and it looked amazing. My Wife and I decided to return again this year to see the social side of Ypres. We arrived at the Christmas market and there was the ice rink and 2 "shop" type stalls. Everything else was food and drink related. Last year there was a roller coaster and much more stalls.Would return again to Ypres as the town is so nice and the people so friendly, but definitely would bother with the market again :(

The Market Square was totally destroyed in WWI and has been totally restored to pre WWI appearance. Must see with bistro's, shops and activities. There is a water fountain that it appeared kids could run through.

We are coming to do the 8pm Menin Gate ceremony
I have read that it is too hard to park near Menin Gate and to park at the railway station
Is this correct . And how do we pay
Written September 9, 2018
If you arrive before 6 p.m. you should be able to find a place at the Market Square or in nearby streets. After that parking is free and it is more difficult to find a free spot. Payment is in advance in parking automat. I don't remember how much it was, but be aware that they only accept coins.

Hello ... would anyone be able to let me know if much is open on a Sunday. We are visiting the war graves of family and wanted to go into the town afterwards. Many thanks in advance.
