My two cousins and I took the 6 hour tour last week while in Ieper (Ypres). To say the least, this was for me probably the best battlefield tour I have ever taken. Lionel is extremely passionate about the history and stories of the Ypres salient, and he really knows his stuff. Friendly and welcoming personality truly made it far greater than a typical battlefield tour. As someone else wrote, Lionel truly does bring the first world war to life with his knowledge and passion. If you can, I highly recommend the full day tour as you will learn and see so much. Thank you Lionel for an amazing day, it was one of the biggest highlights of our trip across Europe!

Thank you for your generous comment. Indeed in 6 hours there is much more to see and to tell... and still we only touched the border of an ocean

I went with my two sisters today on the 4 hour tour with Lionel, a wonderful guide and knowledgeable man, who is clearly proud of his Belgian heritage and ancestors. The mass slaughter of so many soldiers is a difficult subject for any tour, but Lionel was sensitive, informative, yet enthusiastic and gave us some choices on the exact itinerary- there is so much to take in. We saw beautifully preserved cemeteries, old shells and grenades regularly found in local fields, trenches much as they were in 1916 and learnt more about the war poets and the geo-political situation leading up to the 'war to end all wars' - really well done, strongly recommended.

Picked a 4 hour tour as my family were commemorating 100 years to the day that my Grandfather was killed in WW1.
Lionel was extremely interesting and knowledgeable as a tour guide and gave accounts of not only what happened to our troops during the WW1 battles but also told us about local civilians which made it so much more interesting and personal. It was also interesting to visit the German Cemetery as it gave a different perspective.
Highly recommended tour and would contact Lionel again for another tour when I have done further research into my Grandfathers battalion and we return to see more of the area.

My 2 adult Sons and I visited both the South and North Salient around Ypres with Front Line Tours with Lionel ( Tour Guide ), in 2 parts, totaling 6 hours and throughout our host Lionel was an excellent Tour Guide in bringing so many differing strands of anecdotes; the why where how and when..... a very comprehensive content but not too much and perfectly 'paced' to allow one to absorb reflect and consider all that was explained and seen on the Tour itinerary. Lionel was very personable, highly knowledgeable and possesses the natural ability to portray and articulate the gravitas and human personal tragedies as well as the Strategic events which ensued from this terrible conflict within the proximity of Ypres, Passendale Langemarck etc etc...
Enough said really, We would recommend Frontline Tours without any reservation. It really was excellent. Thank you Lionel !!.....S,L&H

Having visited Ypres and a lot the surrounding WW1 attractions in the past 4 years, we felt we needed to get a more in depth view of The Great War. Lionel, is without doubt, a very knowledgable man, and is as equally passionate about this subject. We chose The Messine Ridge Tour, but when Lionel learned that 1 of our party had not been to Ypres before , he offered to split the tour, and do 2 hours on the North Salient and 2 on The South. This gave a more rounded tour, especially for someone who's knowledge of WW1 was minimal. The 4 hour tour flew by, we stopped at several main sites, which we can all do. But just to prove his worth, which really was unnecessary, because his knowledge and delivery did that, he threw in a couple of little gems. We wouldn't hesitate in hiring Lionel again, and we highly recommend his services.

We did 2 tours with Lionel and what an experience it was! What was suppose to be a stop in our 3 weeks travelling became the highlight of our trip!!!! Lionel’s knowledge and enthousiasm contributed to us understanding what lead and happened in WWI and, possibily, subsequently WWII. He is passionate and engaged us to follow him through the tragedies of the war. My husband had an epiphany moment when Lionel recited the poem « In Flanders Fields »! What a moving experience! Thank you Lionel for sharing, teaching us and touching us and with your knowledge and passion.

I suspect he has worked as a scholar with a part time job as an actor. Lionel does a great job putting the amazing history of Ypres together with the the collection of cemeteries and monuments. I would never recommend that a tourist try to see the sights without a guide like Lionel.

did a full day private tour with a group of friends who had been with Lionel one year previously. The theme of this tour was Hitler's WW1 experiences, which is a new tour for Lionel and one which he hasn't quite yet pulled the script together on. Lionel is nevertheless a superb guide with a passionate interest in his subject matter and possessing a deep knowledge of the local history of the area. He is very accommodating and flexible on wishes, requests and questions and I for one shall definitely be looking to return for a more in dept tour with him. Our day started at the Menin gate in Ypres and took in Langenmark, some of the cemeteries and battle sites of the area, positions where Hitler's unit was stationed during the war, and finishing with the Irish peace memorial at Messines. Lionel has an affable easy-going style and is full of anecdotes and interesting facts, his use of old photographs and visual aides really berings the story being told to life in a marvelous fashion. This was a great first introduction to Frontline tours for me, I'll be back for more with Lionel.

We have enjoyed a honeymoon through Europe & made a spontaneous decision to head to Ypres to explore WWI. We are so glad we connected with Frontline Tours. Lionel was an outstanding tour guide who brought passion & heart to our tour of the frontline. Unfortunately everything was booked up & we were only able to fit into the 2hr tour but it was well worth it. Lionel included poetry, images, personal stories & historic record. He brings massive knowledge to the tour but tells it as fresh as if he was telling the story for the first time. He answered our questions with warmth, understanding & good solid facts. The van is comfortable & luxurious. We cannot recommend Frontline Tours & Lionel highly enough. He is a Belgium National Treasure.
With Love,
Andrew & Kristy Mills

I've been through Ieper a few times now, and have had the great experience of taking many tours of the area with a few different groups. Lionel's tour which my two cousins and I took earlier last month was one of the better of the tours I've taken. He provides a wonderful overview of the locations visited, and then grants you time to take pictures and have a look around yourself as well. The three of us were very interested in the Canadian landmarks in the area, and Lionel was more than happy to make those a priority on our trip for us, while also being fair in giving us a good broad look at the area, and not focusing on one item too far. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Lionel, and will be offering up his name and this company anytime I hear of anyone visiting the Ieper area that might be looking for a tour. Highly suggested.
