It gives a good historic correct insight in what 1302 means for Flandres.
The audio guide voice is sometimes a bit too elaborate.
Count an hour for a visit to this nice little museum

We came here not knowing what it was about but saw plenty of signs in the city so had to visit. Cost 6 Euros and you get an audio guide which is necessary as there are no English/French/German written translations. The person at the desk said that the museum covers the history of Kortrijk but in reality it focussed on the war between the Flemish peasants and the French army in 1302, hence the name of the place!

I personally did not find some of the sections (points 5-7 which covered the battle scenes) interesting, and the audio guide was not in sync with the film on the monitor screen which didn't help. I guess it's horses for courses as there are people who would enjoy this aspect if they are into military history. There was a huge section on historical characters involved in the lead up to the battle which I found interesting, however there were far too many characters to hear about so selected just a few.

The upper floor had many book illustrations and posters on the history of the battle - and I felt the lack of translations dampened what could have been a more enjoyable visit.

The final section was in the theatre which showed a Belgian film summarising the history of the battle- this better explained the exhibits when one could hear the audio guide, as most of the time the film volume was so much higher than the audio guide volume. I could not see in the dark to change the volume!

A museum rich in artefacts and information about the 1302 Flemish Battle of the Golden Spurs when the common men of West Flanders from Brugges, Ieper and Kortrijk combined at Kortrijk to rout the superior French knights and their army. Fascinating

Fantastic little museum, who doesn't like to know about medieval warfare and French defeats!
Great exhibits even a little dressing up!
I thought the audio guide was very good and the film at the end most informative.
Quite difficult to find, there may have been more people there if the signage was better!

There is very little to see in this museum, and the audio guide, which is rather necessary as there really is little to see, is long-winded and not particularly good. The museum tries to explain and analyse the reasons for the war between the count, the burghers and the king of France, and focusses on the battle of the guilded spurs. It however fails in both, with the audience just getting snaps of facts here and there. There is a section on the abuse of the battle in later times for propaganda, which is the most interesting section, but would be much more powerful if the part explaining the causes, the participants as well as the non-participants did not fail rather miserably.
The exhibit does have some well preserved wooden statues of unknown origin of important people at the time of the battle, and a 3 original objects.

This museum is centered on the epic Flemish victory over the French knights' army, near Kortrijk, in 1302. The museum tells all about the background and it shows many items related to the battle, particularly weapons, spurs, sculptures of important people, and depictions of the battle. Most of this is displayed in one large room and a corridor. A movie plays in a separate room. When I visited there was another exhibition about WWI in this region. This part too shows some weaponry, German helmets, a few uniforms. And some information about the German pilots, including the (in)famous red baron. A novelty to me was the information that some Flandriens tried to establish an independent Flanders within the German Reich.

This museum's name derives from the date of the battle of the Golden Spurs. It is very famous in Belgium and took place between Flemish farmers and French knights.
We found the museum to be much more interesting and enjoyable than we were anticipating. The museum not only explains the battle but explores how this event has been politicised in subsequent years. It explains how the battle became a myth and how the myth took on a life of its own. Please make sure you see the film at the end of the tour, it is well worth the short wait. The audio guide is also in English.

Its a very well laid out and modern museum. It explains a lot about this pivotal moment in Flemish history, and how it has been misrepresented over the years. My only slight niggle is that although the audio guide is pretty good, its does not explain some of the individual items, coins etc. In other museums there are plasticised cards that you can pick up in each area which identify the exhibits (normally by number) and explain what they are in multiple languages.

This museum is dedicated to the famous Battle of Courtrai (Guldensporenslag) in 1302. An audioguide is included in the entrance price. Please mention if you came by train, then you pay €1 less.
The audioguide is really good and explains well the motives and moves of the different parties involved in the battle. On the ground floor, everything about the battle is shown. The second floor is dedicated to more recent times and how the Belgians perceived the battle through the years.
At the end of the tour, there is a film which tells more or less the same story as you already heard on the audioguide. And finally there is also a kid’s corner where the children can dress as knights and damsels.
It is rather a small museum and I expected more things to see, but overall an interesting museum to visit which tells an important part of the history of Belgium and Flanders.

if you want to learn about the history of Flanders AND if you want to get an insight into the mechanics behind forming a cultural identity, then you should visit the place. The identity part is very instructive for allcultures, I must say. Makes you think.
