A museum rich in artefacts and information about the 1302 Flemish Battle of the Golden Spurs when the common men of West Flanders from Brugges, Ieper and Kortrijk combined at Kortrijk to rout the superior French knights and their army. Fascinating

Having been to school in England, I knew nothing at all about this rebellion. It's a fascinating story and gives greater understanding to how Belgium came to be divided by language. The museum is well laid out and well kept, although the information leaflets are only in Flemish - none in English. Similarly any labelling, although it is possible to get an audio guide in English and (I think) German. They desperately need more funding to broaden the appeal to a wider range of nationalities. It cost us 4€ each to get in but only because the film wasn't working; it usually costs 6€. It's worth allowing yourself one and a half to two hours to do the place justice and it is definitely worth a visit.

The battle of the Golden Spurs of 11 July 1302 became as important in the 19th and 20th century for Belgian Flemish identity as it was in the 14th century. This exhibition which is designed for visits by children as well as for serious history students is very well laid out with a multi-language audio guide and both original and replica artefacts. Relive the first battle when a dismounted Flemish people's army defeated a superior horse mounted army of professional French knights. Then follows the story of how celebrating its anniversaries in 19th and 20th C were used to advance contemporary Flemish identity. In its own restored medieval building - a must for visitors to Kortrijk.

New museum (and part of the town Information Centre ) totally dedicated to The Battle of the Golden Spurs 1302 and it's place in Flemish history. It is really only manageable with the audio guide as there is little in the way of information panels . However, although we usually dislike the audio approach, this time it was excellent. -but do allow at least 1.5 hrs to get round to get the best from it. Neither was it aimed primarily at the younger age group - to wit - it didn't talk down to you and was far more adult friendly than most museums these days. (we refrained from dressing up! ). If you have the time and like medieval history do go round this little gem. And then don't miss the Onze leven Vrauwekerk where there are replica golden spurs hanging from the ceiling. The Grafskapel there is a stunner too. ..

It's at the information centre - there is a local sign missing and the information centre is not central. A lot of money has been spent on this building and presentation. It's focused on education and lacks historical artefacts, sometimes approaching indoctrination but you can ignore that in light of the French /Dutch influence debate and just enjoy the history it's fine.
