Or a rod, enjoying the sun on a good day, on a terrace while watching the boats passing through the canals.
Around, typical buildings, nowadays very well kept. In the past, it was the commercial area where ships arrived with goods from other countries.
In the center, the statue of the artist Van Eyck, dominating the enclave.

Jan Van Eyckplein is not one of the historic square of Bruges. It has been constructed at the end of the 18th century, after St John's Bridge (or New Year's Bridge) was demolished and a first part of the Kraanrei Canal was covered. In 1844 it took the name of Netherlandish painter Jan van Eyck. Part of the cobbled square is a car park and we didn’t find much to do here in winter. Apart from having a look at the painter's statue and taking a picture against the backdrop of Spiegelrei Canal we could only gaze at the exterior of historic buildings like the Poorters Loge and the Tolhuis (listed separately on Tripadvisor), . The Provincial Information Centrum housed in the Toll House is closed till 23 February 2023.

Several good restaurants on this square. It's located at the end of an arm of the canals and is beautiful at night with the lights reflecting off the canal.

Jan Van Eyckplein is a beautiful small square in the Historic Centre of Bruges where you will find attractive Medieval period buildings and a monument to the Flemish Old Master - Jan Van Eyck.

During the Middle Ages, this was a bustling area with much commercial activity and a point of international trade. In later centuries, the square was created providing the quiet and quaint scene you find here today.

In addition to the monument to Jan Van Eyck, it's worth spending time viewing the historic Poortersloge (The Burghers' Lodge) and Tolhuis (Old Toll House) as well as other attractive buildings on the square. If you stand in the middle of Jan Van Eyckplein there is an information panel highlighting these and other important buildings here.

but more importantly the 'cheap chocolate chop' (Jan de Clerck) is just 2 blocks up, walking away from the statue on the right hand side of the street

I was truly amazed at the history found around this square. You can spend an entire day just walking the canal, the streets or just sitting on a bench watching the colors change on the canal and the 13th and 14th century buildings. This was the heart and soul of Medieval Bruges, where the goods came in to the city, were stored and tolls were assessed. The burghers had their hall here. The canal has been altered but, a little imagination, you can see and feel what it must have been like.
I found this square more interesting-and less crowded-than the Market square(except for the Belfort). Plus you are close to the Saint Anne district-best place to walk with amazing churches. The horse drawn carriages come through here on the way to and from the Market square 4 times a day and the free shuttle stops here every 20 minutes. Clubs, bars and restaurants everywhere-and not expensive. Best hotel-the Biskajer- only 500 feet from the square.

We found this square on a walk we took around town. It is quaint, cafes, not overly crowded, and close to main area of old town. We also enjoyed a great lite lunch at a little family run cafe (Tatties).

We were fortunate to have selected a hotel overlooking the canal at Jan Van Eyck Square. Small, intimate restaurants and cafes face the square and offer a break from the hustle and bustle of the more touristy areas in Bruges. The bus line does move through here and cars tend to speed so one needs to be careful with pedestrian, bike and vehicular traffic moving together. Very picturesque for photo opportunities on the bridges; this canal is also included in boat tours. Very close to Chocolate Museum.
