Poertoren (Powder Tower) is an 18 metre tall tower constructed in 1397. It formed part of the fortifications around the city during the Middle Ages and is beautifully situated on the west side of bridge that crosses Minnewater Lake.
You can see Poertoren as you walk south on either side of the lake. Just beside the tower, there is a bronze set of steps that lead down to a sunken garden area just beside the water. This is a neat little find and place to see as well. Definitely worth a quick look-see if you ware exploring this area of Bruges.

The whole area around this tower and this side of Bruges is stunning. The scenery is superb and picture perfect. I enjoyed this area more than the center (although that was beautiful too) Bruges as a whole is definitely a "must visit"

The Powder Tower is next to Lake Minnewater in the park. The bridge by the powder tower has a beautiful view of the lake and there are plenty of nearby walking paths.

Do not make an effort just to visit this round red brick gun powder tower located in Minnewater Park. This tower is not as appealing to look at as the other town gates around the perimeter of Bruges. While this tall round tower is in perfect condition - no war damage - the view from the walkway is just of the tower's exterior. The red doors around one side of the tower were locked so no entry was possible. This round structure also had small staggered windows and a narrow helmeted tower attached to its side. Although once this tower was a part of the city's outer defense walls, there were no walls attached to this tower. It was standing alone, now guarding the narrow bridge over the water in Minnewater Park. Actually, most of our tour group ignored the gun powder tower as we walked past it from the coach rest stop on Bargeplein to Begijnplein. Most of our attention was focused on the lake with its canal house at the end and swans swimming in the water. However, I did get pleasing photos of this tower from the narrow bridge in front of it.

Constructed at the end of the 14th century as a water tower and as a part of the fortifications of Bruges. Later converted into a storage for gun powder. Not open to the public, this landmark can't be visited from the inside, unless on special occasions with an official guide.

I picked up an In Bruges (film) map showing the locations shot. This was one of the locations with Ralph Fiennes walking across the bridge. To get to the attraction you have to walk through a park with the canal, it's not busy at all as you take a less touristy route on the outskirts of the centre. Beautiful walk

The tower is an interesting landmark. Doesn't appear that you can get inside it, although we really just made quite a brief stop!

This is a lovely tower, dating back over 600 years, located within a gorgeous green park. The tower provides a plethora of photo-ops.

The 'Poertoren' meaning the 'Powder Tower' rises 18 meters above the bruges minnewater waterline. It was built in 1401 by master mason 'Jan van Oudenaerde' .
