At the urging of our walking tour guide we attended one of Luc's fascinating 40-minute concerts. He plays his own music on standard symphonic and Celtic harps, and re-creations of ancient instruments that he builds himself. A stunning copy of one discovered in Iraq in 1929 has a haunting sound that buzzes like a sitar. He makes evocative use of the exotic scale to which it is tuned. We were impressed with his ability on so many instruments and the sincerity of all of his music and its communication. His free concerts have become a classy attraction in Bruges.

Luc is incredibly talented and made everyone feel welcome. He began by checking on the languages in the room and then proceeded to explain everything in French, Dutch and English. It was wonderful to hear him play and also learn more about the instruments he had, a lot of which he has made himself. The music was beautiful to listen to and a perfect afternoon activity, especially when the weather wasn’t so great! Would recommend to anyone who has a spare 40 minutes in Brugge to go along and support him. It’s completely free but Luc is self employed so please take cash so you can purchase a CD or leave a donation.

Luc's music is touching and refreshing. I didn't expect much before going so i was in for a positive surprise. I got tears of joy at some points. Also, i like the idea that entry is free and people can pay as per their means. I bought the USB, though in present forms of availability of music via spotify etc., i find USD/CD options bit outdated and pricey. But since i like his music very much, i am happy to have bought some of his music to enjoy back home.

Thank you for your kind reaction. I wish to point out that in the domain of classical music cd's aren't outdated at all. Artists and the record companies still make cd's as markers of a career. In my case the sale of cd's make the free entry possible. The contribution of free gifts isn't sufficient by far to pay the rent and other costs. If i distribute my music by streaming i wouldn't be able to maintain this. Only big stars make money by streaming because of massive volume. Smaller artists are pushed out because too little. Of course i perfectly understand that from the consumers point of view streaming is the best. However, streaming has become the top tool for computer and software companies to rule the market and to make people depending. The fact that Apple doesn't supply usb ports anymore clearly shows how they avoid direct contact between artists and their audience and they succeed to make both artist and public depending on them. I refuse to go with that. In the mean time people often do not realise how complex my concert is. It would never be possible to travel with my instrument setting because of huge transport and setting up cost. This makes the event unique. In the end, i must make a living too. That is my so called "business plan". I hope i will be able to continue many more years. Thanks again and many greetings from Bruges.

I took time out last week to visit this free Harp concert and I found it a calming period in an otherwise busy holiday.
Luc not only plays various different harps but gives a brief talk about them as well.
I'll certainly try to attend another performance when I'm next in Bruges.

Luc is a fantastic harpist who took us on a tour of harp-based instruments from across time and around the world. A wonderful player with evident passion for his music. A fantastic experience, and one I’d thoroughly recommend.

I would never have thought that I would say this about a harp concert, but it was actually great!
Mister Vanlaere plays on various instruments, many of which he has built himself.
It was really realxing music and very enjoyable.
After the concert he explains some details about his instruments and is happy to have a chat with you.
And although itˋs for free, I highly encourage you to bring some cash to throw in his little box, it's well deserved!

This is an absolutely amazing experience, the music he played was phenomenal. So many interesting instruments with beautiful sounds, Luc explained about the instruments and is extremely passionate about musical instruments and was open to some questions at the end. If you can make it to one of his shows I highly recommend it was fantastic.

I’m so lucky a fellow traveler recommended this concert. In a hidden section of the museums lies was a magical performance by a very talented musician. Luc played several instruments from his collection and shared a little about each one. What’s even better, is that the concert is fee and you donate what you wish. What a joy!

It was an absolute pleasure to see Mr. Vanlaere in action, I couldn’t recommend a visit highly enough. My girlfriend and I were blown away by his levels of talent and knowledge during the 40 minute intimate show that he put on for free in Bruges. Go and see the show, donate generously and feed your soul with this man’s genius.

The 40 minute concert was a delight.

Luc Vanlaere is a creative and talented musician and builder of musical instruments.

His passion is inspirational and his knowledge of harp music is global. His session is almost meditative and helped by the relaxed setting and low level lighting. It’s a must-see if you appreciate live music but expect creative expression rather than classical pieces.

We LOVED it!
