At the urging of our walking tour guide we attended one of Luc's fascinating 40-minute concerts. He plays his own music on standard symphonic and Celtic harps, and re-creations of ancient instruments that he builds himself. A stunning copy of one discovered in Iraq in 1929 has a haunting sound that buzzes like a sitar. He makes evocative use of the exotic scale to which it is tuned. We were impressed with his ability on so many instruments and the sincerity of all of his music and its communication. His free concerts have become a classy attraction in Bruges.

Wonderful afternoon experience in the harp museum listening to Luc play beautiful music on varied instruments. Highly recommend attending one of his mini-concerts (about a 30 minute performance). Very talented musician and composer.

Had the pleasure to experience this, and wow! Luc's talents are amazing and are well-matched by his passion for sharing music with everyone (which he shares through a very powerful speech at the end of his set). I've never personally seen any harp in person and his ability to not only play all different types but explain them so well was something to marvel at.

It fills up very early so would suggest coming early to grab a seat!

The Mini Harp Museum and Luc Vanlaere's performance are an overall lovely experience. The music itself, which consists exclusively of Luc Vanlaere's own compositions, was warm and relaxing. His presentation of the instruments and their distinctive histories was perspicuous and engaging. It's definitely worth a visit when in Bruges!

If you have time to attend one of these free concerts, you will not be disappointed. It takes place at 3pm, 5pm and 6.30 pm at the Old St John’s Hospital, and is fairly well signposted once you are in the vicinity. The concert goes for about 40 minutes. The music was beautiful and uplifting; clearly Luc is a master of his craft. Not to be missed!

Amazing performance by an extraordinarily talented musician who is clearly passionate about music, about culture, art, music and access to it for everyone.
He makes many of his own instruments - which is more than just impressive when you see these instruments -

I suggest arriving 20 min before the performance for a seat.

Well worth the time invested.

Luc is incredibly talented and made everyone feel welcome. He began by checking on the languages in the room and then proceeded to explain everything in French, Dutch and English. It was wonderful to hear him play and also learn more about the instruments he had, a lot of which he has made himself. The music was beautiful to listen to and a perfect afternoon activity, especially when the weather wasn’t so great! Would recommend to anyone who has a spare 40 minutes in Brugge to go along and support him. It’s completely free but Luc is self employed so please take cash so you can purchase a CD or leave a donation.

I am so pleased in my Bruge wanderings to have stumbled upon Luc Vanlaere’s free 40-minute harp concert, at Site Oud StJan, Mariastraat 38. Luc’s small harp museum is impressive, and his playing of various harps and other musical instruments magical. It was a most beautiful and intimate sharing of music and knowledge. There is absolutely no pressure to pay, donate or buy anything. Luc does have his CD’s for sale, and I so enjoyed his music that I bought one. If you have any appreciation for music at all, do attend one of Luc’s concerts. You will be very glad you did.

Luc's music is touching and refreshing. I didn't expect much before going so i was in for a positive surprise. I got tears of joy at some points. Also, i like the idea that entry is free and people can pay as per their means. I bought the USB, though in present forms of availability of music via spotify etc., i find USD/CD options bit outdated and pricey. But since i like his music very much, i am happy to have bought some of his music to enjoy back home.

Thank you for your kind reaction. I wish to point out that in the domain of classical music cd's aren't outdated at all. Artists and the record companies still make cd's as markers of a career. In my case the sale of cd's make the free entry possible. The contribution of free gifts isn't sufficient by far to pay the rent and other costs. If i distribute my music by streaming i wouldn't be able to maintain this. Only big stars make money by streaming because of massive volume. Smaller artists are pushed out because too little. Of course i perfectly understand that from the consumers point of view streaming is the best. However, streaming has become the top tool for computer and software companies to rule the market and to make people depending. The fact that Apple doesn't supply usb ports anymore clearly shows how they avoid direct contact between artists and their audience and they succeed to make both artist and public depending on them. I refuse to go with that. In the mean time people often do not realise how complex my concert is. It would never be possible to travel with my instrument setting because of huge transport and setting up cost. This makes the event unique. In the end, i must make a living too. That is my so called "business plan". I hope i will be able to continue many more years. Thanks again and many greetings from Bruges.

I took time out last week to visit this free Harp concert and I found it a calming period in an otherwise busy holiday.
Luc not only plays various different harps but gives a brief talk about them as well.
I'll certainly try to attend another performance when I'm next in Bruges.
