- Kate ALondon, United Kingdom4 contributionsAbsolutely beautifulLuc is incredibly talented and made everyone feel welcome. He began by checking on the languages in the room and then proceeded to explain everything in French, Dutch and English. It was wonderful to hear him play and also learn more about the instruments he had, a lot of which he has made himself. The music was beautiful to listen to and a perfect afternoon activity, especially when the weather wasn’t so great! Would recommend to anyone who has a spare 40 minutes in Brugge to go along and support him. It’s completely free but Luc is self employed so please take cash so you can purchase a CD or leave a donation.Visited August 2020Traveled as a coupleWritten August 29, 2020
- SunDevilin6 contributionsMagical experience in BrugesI’m so lucky a fellow traveler recommended this concert. In a hidden section of the museums lies was a magical performance by a very talented musician. Luc played several instruments from his collection and shared a little about each one. What’s even better, is that the concert is fee and you donate what you wish. What a joy!Visited December 2019Traveled soloWritten February 16, 2020
- Veggie TravellerLondon, United Kingdom2 contributionsOne of the best concerts i’ve seenIn a small out of the way place was worrying that it might be strange or boring. In a group with some keen musicians and some who didn’t know much about it we all loved it! Relaxing and inspiring and an amazing way to spend a spare 40 mins. Was completely free but would have happily paid at least €10. Performing was so talented and knew so much about his craft it was awesome to seeVisited January 2020Traveled with familyWritten January 3, 2020

My partner and I were recommended to attend one of the Harp concerts in Bruges while we were staying there by our B&B host. We were unsure of what to expect but when we arrived we were greeted by Luc himself and were sat in a small intimate room with all of the different instruments he owned.
It was truely the absolute highlight of our trip to Bruges. The concert was magical and the use of all the different harps was very intriguing. Luc spoke to the audience throughout the concert and got to know the audience in a comedic way. He told us about the music and his life and I would 100% recommend to include this as part of your Bruges exploration.

At the urging of our walking tour guide we attended one of Luc's fascinating 40-minute concerts. He plays his own music on standard symphonic and Celtic harps, and re-creations of ancient instruments that he builds himself. A stunning copy of one discovered in Iraq in 1929 has a haunting sound that buzzes like a sitar. He makes evocative use of the exotic scale to which it is tuned. We were impressed with his ability on so many instruments and the sincerity of all of his music and its communication. His free concerts have become a classy attraction in Bruges.

Luc's music is touching and refreshing. I didn't expect much before going so i was in for a positive surprise. I got tears of joy at some points. Also, i like the idea that entry is free and people can pay as per their means. I bought the USB, though in present forms of availability of music via spotify etc., i find USD/CD options bit outdated and pricey. But since i like his music very much, i am happy to have bought some of his music to enjoy back home.

Thank you for your kind reaction. I wish to point out that in the domain of classical music cd's aren't outdated at all. Artists and the record companies still make cd's as markers of a career. In my case the sale of cd's make the free entry possible. The contribution of free gifts isn't sufficient by far to pay the rent and other costs. If i distribute my music by streaming i wouldn't be able to maintain this. Only big stars make money by streaming because of massive volume. Smaller artists are pushed out because too little. Of course i perfectly understand that from the consumers point of view streaming is the best. However, streaming has become the top tool for computer and software companies to rule the market and to make people depending. The fact that Apple doesn't supply usb ports anymore clearly shows how they avoid direct contact between artists and their audience and they succeed to make both artist and public depending on them. I refuse to go with that. In the mean time people often do not realise how complex my concert is. It would never be possible to travel with my instrument setting because of huge transport and setting up cost. This makes the event unique. In the end, i must make a living too. That is my so called "business plan". I hope i will be able to continue many more years. Thanks again and many greetings from Bruges.

Stumbled across this free harp concert in beautiful Bruges. Luc played multiple harp instruments (some of which he hand made) plus the steel pan drum, bamboo flute, and other percussion instruments. One harp (a replica of the first known musical instrument the Lyre of Ur) took 2 years to make with gold leaf, mother of pearl and lapis lazuli semi-precious stone inlays. A must see for every visitor. And please leave a donation if you don't buy his CD / USB.

Highly recommend seeing Luc, he was very talented, very friendly and funny. Blew me away with the instruments he played, and built - really something very special to be a part. One of the highlights of my time in Brugge.

I would never have thought that I would say this about a harp concert, but it was actually great!
Mister Vanlaere plays on various instruments, many of which he has built himself.
It was really realxing music and very enjoyable.
After the concert he explains some details about his instruments and is happy to have a chat with you.
And although itˋs for free, I highly encourage you to bring some cash to throw in his little box, it's well deserved!

During my vacation in Bruges I learned about Luc Vanlaere's harp concerts purely by chance. What a wonderful experience! Luc enchants with his own compositions on a wide variety of harps, as well as with hang, singing bowls and gongs. A heavenly listening experience for all of us that I can definitely recommend - especially since it's free, just giving a donation.
