About
Travel back in time to the Middle Ages! The Historium – Bruges’ most visited attraction – lets you step back in time. You can see how lively Bruges was during the Golden Age in various ways. In the Historium Story you follow the love story of Jacob, Jan van Eyck’s apprentice, as you wander through this spectacular attraction with film, backdrops and special effects. In the Historium Exhibition you will find additional information about Medieval Bruges or you can get started on the Family Trail. Go back to the year 1435 in the Historium Virtual Reality and sail virtually into the port of Bruges! You will see how the Waterhalle and Belfort tower were in the past and can fly from the Market Square to the former St. Donatian’s Cathedral. NEW: you can now climb the Historium Tower for an impressive 360° view of the Market Square and the Belfry. The activities are available in 10 different languages. Open daily from 10h am – 6h pm (tickets until 5h pm).

    Unique Experience!
I was pleasantly surprised at this museum. We did the three experience package that included 8 minutes of virtual reality, a walk through the museum, and a climb to the top of the Belfry Tower. We could have skipped out on the virtual reality but still been great. The museum walk through told the story at that time of the making of the Madonna and Child painting by Jan van Eyck. They recreated the smells of the time and you walk through seven rooms as if you were standing right there! The climb to the top of the belfry was okay. There is no real platform so you have to be relatively skinny to get the 360 degree view. This is a must for a first time visitor to Bruges.
Thank you for this nice review and glad to read that you enjoyed your visit! Just one thing: the Historium tower is not the Belfry :-) Always welcome for a next visit!

    Mediocre
Just missed the mark a little bit in all areas. The VR was fairly basic and the story telling part just seemed to drag on. The best part was the tower with views over Bruges. If it was pouring with rain maybe an ok way to spend a couple of hours.
Thank you for your review. We are sorry to read that the visit did not fully meet your expectations. With the Historium we try to give an impression of medieval Bruges, for a very broad audience, so that both young and old can learn something. If you want more depth, you can delve into the Historium Exhibition, or we refer you to the other museums in Bruges.

Good experience, but doesn’t support Fathers.
A good experience that atmospherically illustrated life in Bruges during its height. The VR was especially good, despite being slightly out of focus for my eyes. I have docked a star because of the ridiculous situation in the toilets. Why are the baby changing facilities only in the female toilets? I hate this as a father. It is sexist towards women because it dictates that they do the changing, and it is sexist towards fathers because it invalidates their ability to parent. It is disgraceful that such a prominent tourist attraction should act this way. It is thinking from the 1950s.
Thank you for your honest review and glad to read you enjoyed your visit. I paid attention to your remark about the baby changing facilities. Honestly, it's the first time someone noticed. I'll take care of it and promise you we will look for another way or solution.

After strolling through the Market Square you can step inside the nearby Historium.
This beautiful building is home to a special 8 minute virtual reality experience that will take you back in time to medieval Bruges.
The museum is a sequence of rooms with a story to follow - there are projections, smells of things like old firewood, animatronics, dramatic music & special effects.
After time travelling to medieval Bruges, you can step outside to the Historium's terrace which will give you a fantastic view over the Market Square.

When I mean early between 10 -12 as from what I have just experienced Brugge doesn't stir itself until the afternoon. God send if, like me, like to visit attractions without struggling through crowds.
Had the place to myself. The reception staff were very cheerful and helpful recognising I have a small limp and warning me of the number of stairs.
Imaginative way of telling the history of Brugges through audio, film and animontranic set pieces.

We visited this place 2 weeks ago (October 2021). If you want to have virtual tour, you need to pay the ticket. They have beer party in the first floor and you can enter there for free.

They provide stand frame for the visitors to take a picture. The decorations for Halloween is great and interesting.

You must wear a mask before entering to the property. They provide hand sanitizer for the visitors to clean their hands.

My husband and I had one full day in Bruges. We did a free walking tour followed by Historium Brugge Story (not the virtual tour or the tower). It was really well done. We have travelled a lot and my husband is a bit of a history hound. We found the historium well presented and extremely interesting. If you want a good overview of the history of Bruges, visit the historium. If you want something with more detail where you can ask questions, we suggest the historic walking tours.

First contact ever with virtual reality.
Museum is greatly turned into a trip back in time taking the glorious ages of prosperity in Brugge.
Seven interactive rooms telling the story of finding the Muse of Jan Van Eyck when making his famous Madonna
Excellent way to tell the story of town

The way this museum guides the guest with audio through the rooms is very nice. We thought it was unique, and less boring than just reading signs. My daughter (10y) enjoyed it a lot.
Would defenitely recommend with kids/teenagers.

This has been updated with the inclusion of an 8 minute virtual reality experience, offered at an additional cost to the main tour. My personal feeling is that not only is this worth undertaking but that it offers more than the old Historium tour provides. this is because the virtual reality is giving you facts in addition to the exciting experience of being immersed in the changing Bruges landscape. If money was an issue, buy the virtual reality and skip the tour. The tour can still be fun, listening on your own audio headphones. There is also a very good viewing platform on the tour that allows you to see over the Markt and take some great photos.

Thank you for this nice review. The VR is an additional experience to the main attraction of the Historium Story. They are complementary to each other, When combining the activities, you can also save money.

This place was spoilt by the number of school parties visiting at the same time. Interesting but too much noise and too many young people blocking the stairs, corridor and toilets. Not fun if you are adults without kids in tow.

What a great couple of hours that provided entertainment for the whole family. We opted for a ticket with a beer included which we had sat on the balcony overlooking the main square. The VR tour is brilliant and although not cutting edge technology it provided a great insight into how things used to be.
