- Thomas VOakland, California19,417 contributionsYou will absolutely have to come to this big open square on your visit as it is the center of everything and because the gorgeous architecture of this historic city is on full display here. You will also find a big statue. It can be very busy and crowded with so many tourists, but we were here in winter and it was peaceful. I hope it is peaceful for you as well.Visited December 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 18, 2025
- galadiel67Chiavari, Italy3,851 contributionsBrugge's market square, even under a gray October sky, vibrates with life and is still, after 10 centuries, the heart of the city and the region. The square has retained its medieval appearance, with stepped facade buildings and the famous Belfort (bell tower). Very, very touristy, you need a bit of abstraction from the crowd to enjoy its beauty and ancient spirit.Visited October 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 1, 2025
- hirorumiChuo, Japan1,496 contributionsMarkt Square is in the center of Bruges and is home to the Belfry, guild houses, city hall, tourist information, cafes, and souvenir shops. It is a very lively place where tourist buses and horse-drawn carriages arrive and depart. Depending on which direction you look at it, the buildings have different atmospheres, so you'll want to take pictures all around. There are toilets, but they are available for a fee.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 18, 2024
- John T1 contributionThe overall experience was absolutely outstanding and out of the world. But I just want to rant about the old lady with the blonde hair who works the aperol spritz drink cabin in the big market place.she was nice to the point where she realised that I did not have 5€ cash to pay for a deposit on the glasses and the whole attitude changed to a point where you would I have thought I had asked for drinks and had no money to pay for them even though I was showing her my card as I did with every other drinks bar in the Christmas market. She was absolutely vile demanding 5€ in cash for the deposit for the glasses which others did but accepted card. However she wanted to go against the grain without advertising the fact. In my opinion I would suggest that people give this bar a miss and use the other bars because they were amazing.Visited November 2024Traveled with familyWritten November 30, 2024
- lasolis1Leon, Spain4,342 contributionsWhat a beautiful square! And what an atmosphere! Tourists, locals, market, flower stands, horse calesas, cafes, beautiful shops... Magical space with colored medieval guild houses, with their typical gable roofs. Logically, it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's all taken care of to the millimeter. It leaves you speechless.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 23, 2024
- Olaf Johansen54 contributionsThe Markt is the heart of Bruges, full of restaurants, cafes, and historic buildings. The lively square is perfect for people-watching and enjoying local cuisine. The horse-drawn carriages add to the medieval charm. It’s a great starting point for exploring the city, with beautiful architecture and bustling activity.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 26, 2024
- Alejandro0203Pilar, Argentina520 contributionsThis square is a little bigger than Burg square but with the same magic. Looking at the buildings it looks like a model because it doesn't look real. Like the other square, at night it is also magical because it is much quieter. UnmissableVisited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 11, 2024
- DarlaBournemouth, United Kingdom51 contributionsWe came to the Bruges Christmas Market with Darla on Christmas Eve to celebrate the festive month and it was lovely. We went to a lovely cafe to have a hot chocolate and were seated outside. We then looked around the market and it was lovely but there’s a massive treatment difference to small/medium and big dogs, small dog were allowed in every dog friendly store and cafes but you can see shopkeeper/cafe workers faces looking as if to say “don’t even think about coming in” but apart from that it was lovely. Just keep it in mind if you have a big dog, bring warm clothes and someone to hold them if you want to go into dog friendly places! It was very lovely and I recommend.Visited December 2024Traveled with familyWritten December 26, 2024
- MichelBrussels, Belgium29 contributionsNot to be missed. Beautiful place, like the whole city, by the way But flee the establishments that line the square and charge you dearly for suspicious dishes; possibly a drink on the terrace? You pay for the place.Visited November 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten November 14, 2024
- EnamouradoLevallois-Perret, France1,036 contributionsBeautiful square with everything you need, monuments, restaurants, shops. The carriage rides, on the other hand, are very expensive... We wanted to please our child but 70€... The chocolates and waffles cost us less with a good digestive walk.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 11, 2024

Visited Bruges on a Tuesday and of course the market. Despite a Tuesday, it is still very busy, mainly with groups walking through the city with a guide. The horse-drawn carriages start their tour here. Many beautiful buildings on the market but also outside the market. I think a negative point is the high prices of the catering industry, which is why we chose to eat and drink something further down the road.

We went for the Christmas Market, unfortunately it’s more of a food market. The main square has approximately 40 stalls with all of those that face inwards offering food or drink. The small market that is 3 to 4 minutes walk away has 20 stalls that again are mainly food stalls. These can no way be classed as Christmas Markets. Luckily Bruges has a good selection of shops, restaurant's and cafes, that more than make up for the lack of a Christmas market.

It was ok, I really expected more. Lots of fast food and a lot of the stalls are similar. Nice when the lights come on.
Toilets are hard with a baby, but e went to the museum and it was a euro or free is you had a ticket or bought something from the shop. The toilets in the train station are a nightmare!
The part I really hated was the horses, they were so overworked. By the end of the day we had seen the same horse pulling a heavy cart of people so many times, its head was so low, it was tired and it was really hard to watch. I hope the council have set standards for the care of these horses.
Also the rider was shouting at people to move, whilst holding a crop.

I've always wanted to visit a Christmas market in Europe and imagined lots of independent sellers with a lovely range of unique Christmas gifts. I'm so disappointed. Socks, gloves, cheese and alcohol on repeat. And a bit of Christmas tat thrown in. The 'ice' rink is a joke. Thankfully we only paid for two out of five of us to skate because it was beyond awful. There was nothing synthetic about it. It was plastic. White plastic that was wet due to the rain. We were refused a refund dispute trying to skate for only a few minutes. Myself and daughter can skate and we could barely stand up on this plastic nonsense. Overall, a really disappointing experience.

OK, so this review is only for the Markt itself and I will praise that. The Markt and its architecture is beautiful and one could sit and study it for hours. The issue I have is with the cheesy tourist driven cafes that offer poor tourist-driven food and crowds. They even go as far as putting out English menus hawking their wares and advertising for tourists. As far as the Markt itself, it is one of the most beautiful squares in Europe with its centerpiece, The Belfort. Unfortunately it is ruined by The Historium and the poor horses who endlessly carry about tourists. Listen, I get it; Bruges derives much of its income from tourism but it has gotten out of hand, There are roaming hordes of teens and pre-teens on excursions from school, only to be complicated by day bus trips. On our last visit we at least had a bit of a respite from the day trips during the week. We were surprised at how busy the weekdays were as last trip there were times we felt as if we had the city to ourselves. Forget about the weekends where the crowds are getting to Venice-size proportions. I digress. We loved this city and wanted to return so badly, hang out in The Markt, experience the farmers market and the people of Bruges, but this visit was a disappointment as to how tourism is ruining it. Unrelated to The Markt, we did make our own fun, sought out lesser crowded areas, did a lot more window shopping and try for the experiences that would not necessarily attract crowds. I suggest you do too. Stay away from the Markt as much as possible.

Visited Bruges Christmas Market November 29th to 1st Dec 2022, very disappointing. This is the 4th time I've been to Bruges at this time.
The positives. The city is beautifully lite with Christmas decorations and I've always found the the classic building architecture interesting; always a pleasure to wonder round the canals, streets and the chocolate shops and popping into restaurants for a mulled wine. A carriage ride is a must, priced at 60 Euros.
The negatives. There are two Christmas Markets, one in the Grand-Place, the other where the statue of Simon Stevin is located (Simon Stevinplein). The one is the Grand-Place has a few stalls mostly selling alcohol, cheese and a few selling woolen items. There is no christmas music playing, it just lacks that Christmas feel. The other one hasn't changed over the years, its small and has more of a Christmas charm.
Overall, if you're going to visit the city and experience the streets, restaurants/cafes, canals and you'll have a great time. If it's for the Christmas Market, you'll be better going elsewhere i.e. Salzburg

When we arrived in Bruges, my friend and I were oriented so that we could first reach Markt, the central square of the city. The place is especially beautiful and pleasant. Markt is surrounded by buildings with classical, local architecture. Although it seems that there is road traffic in the square, it is probably not very important and that is why the place is very friendly to pedestrians and cyclists. There are many horse carriages for those who want to take a tour through the city. We noticed that there are especially women driving these horse carriages, not men which, at least for us, is a little bit unusual. All around the square, there are many cafes, restaurants, taverns with terraces in the square, almost full of them all, a sign that it is a very pleasant place to spend some time.

Half a day enough to see what is worth seeing. Too touristy, inflated prices and could be wrong choice but items like chocolate was not impresive. ALL in all, half a day without any shoping ok.

This is the centre of bruge, it is lined with bars and restaurants, although you will pay more for the food and beer in these places. I paid between 7-9€for a pint of beer in these bars. But it is worth stopping her for the Atmosphere.
There is horses and carts here that will take you on a tour of bruge, but I’m not sure on the price.
Also Situated here is the bell tower, that is definitely worth a visit up to the top, I think it was 14€ and it’s quite steep towards the top. Great view at night.
At Christmas they have a central market there with maybe 20 Christmas stalls and also a big drinking tent . This all closes at 23:00

Vibrant and buzzing with life throughout the day, Markt Square is truly the heart of Bruges. It has been used as a marketplace since the 10th century. Dominated by the iconic 83m Belfry, this huge square is also home to numerous restaurants, speciality shops and other businesses. Despite the touristy nature of the place, you can still have a perfect day out….. sipping a local beer at one of the open-air cafe while enjoying the sights around the square and the relaxing clip-clop sound of the horse-drawn carriages.

Hello,
Does anyone know the story of the line of dots across the cobblestones towards an art deco looking building? I'd been told years ago but have forgotten! I posted a photo of it just now. Maybe it's in the review section?
Thanks.....

We are in Bruges from 2-4 Jan, are any of the ice skating rinks open?
Written December 27, 2018
The ice rink in Markt square was still going strong yesterday, I am sorry I have no idea when it closes down. I should imagine that it would still be in operation for a week or so.
it must have cost a lot to install and they will want to get their money back and probably make a profit.

I'm 100% certain that it is free. We have been a couple of times. It is spread around several Squares and streets. Enjoy your wander round. The whole town is spectacular.
