A bit crowded with tourists, and the water was a bit dirty. But it is historic to walk around here. Feel like you are in the middle ages.. :-)

Many old Belgium towns have well preserved examples of these communities. We always tend to visit them as they are quiet peaceful and architecturally very interesting. We were pleased to visit to this one in Bruges as the peace and quiet was very welcome after the hustle and bustle of some of the main tourist areas. Unusually this Begijnhof still... More

I understand- this place is pretty and unusual but overall there are so many other things to see in Bruges. I didn't feel like I really saw or experienced anything new after looking at pictures and reading reviews. If you have time check it out but I wouldn't say it's a "must see"

Not far from Minnewater Lake, is the Beguinage or Begijnhof. For history fans, stop here to see where lay women lived as a community during the medieval era and beyond. The cluster of buildings surround a charming idyllic park. Stop by the chapel and soak in the atmosphere of the the whole compound, you won’t be disappointed. Nearby is Minnewater... More

My favourite part of Bruges. It was so peaceful and serene. I went into the church and the women were singing, and the way it echoed throughout was so beautiful. I definitely recommend this to get away from the very busy, touristy rest of Bruges!

The Beguinage is one of few (or only remaining). Originally was a place of refuge for women. It is a walled area within the city centre - maybe 15 min walk from main square. Little museum inside - where you can see period furniture and learn about the beguinage. Small fee for this. Highly recommend - unusual and interesting.

A relaxed stroll around these mellow grounds balances the hubbub of activity in much of Bruges. Take some time to include it during a walking tour of the old Bruges.

This area has been home to women for centuries. And still is. It's peaceful and people still live there. The lake is right outside. The tour guide said that the walls and gates were there to keep the women safe and that they still lock the gates every night. It's a nice spot.
