You'll find this monument to the Flemish Old Master, Hans Memling at the small square called Woensgadmarkt in the Historic Centre of Bruges. German born, Memling spent much time during the 15th century here in Bruges, becoming one of the most important painters of Early Netherlandish artwork from the Flanders region.
The monument is the work Belgian sculptor Hendrick Pickery (1871) who also created the statue monument of fellow Jan Van Eyck found nearby at Jan Van Eyckplein. It of Memling as a young adult with overcoat and hat, looking forward while holding what appears to be a sketchbook in his left hand and some sort of drawing instrument in his right hand. He is standing upon a fairly simple pedestal with his name in gilding.

Erected in 1874, the statue of Hans Memling dominates the square. The Flemish artist is buried in the nearby St Gilliskerk. If you’re passing it’s worth a look, but maybe not a dedicated visit.

There is a statue of Hans Memling (1430-1494) located in the small Woensdagmarkt in the city of Bruges. This monument was erected in 1874 and is a nice depiction of the German born artist dressed in period attire with cape standing in a straightforward pose.
Memling moved from Germany to Flanders and went on to become a critically important Early Netherlandish painter. In addition to finding his works in museums throughout Europe, you will fin impressive Memling works at Groeninge Museum and St. John's hospital (also known as the Memling Museum).
In the end, this particular statue is a bit isolated but worth seeking out if you are a fan of Hans Memling or enjoy statue and monument viewing during your travels.

Of all the statues in the world, this one will not blow you away. Nonetheless, it us hard to miss and worth a few minutes of your time. Hans Memling was a painter active in Flanders, who worked in the tradition of Early Netherlandish painting. Born in the Middle Rhine region, he probably spent his childhood in Mainz. During his apprenticeship as a painter, he moved to the Netherlands and spent time in the Brussels workshop of Rogier van der Weyden. In 1465, he was made a citizen of Bruges, where he became one of the leading artists and the master of a large workshop. A tax document from 1480 lists him among the wealthiest citizens. Memling's religious works often incorporated donor portraits of the clergymen, aristocrats, and burghers (bankers, merchants, and politicians) who were his patrons. These portraits built upon the styles which Memling learned in his youth.
