Jan van Eyck was a painter active in Bruges who was one of the early innovators of what became known as Early Netherlandish painting, and one of the most significant representatives of Early Northern Renaissance art. This statue honors a great Begian! You won't need more than a few minutes here.

Jan van Eyck was born in 1390 (Maaseik - Belgium) and he died in 1441.
He was a famous (early Northern Renaissance) Flemisch painter, and guess what....yes active in Bruges.

The Jan Van Eyck monument can be found in the small Jan Van Eyckplein in the city of Bruges. The monument is the work of local sculptor H. Pickery and was erected here in 1878. It stands before a canal and is rather beautiful to see in this lovely little square.
Here you find a bronze statue of the Flemish Old Master who is nicely dressed, holding a paintbrush in his right hand as well as a framed painting in his left hand. The statue stands upon a rectangular shaped stone pedestal with a two step monument base. Van Eyck's name is embossed upon the pedestal as well.

Rather large statue at the square named after the same person, and a great tribute to a man who is very important in city's history.

This is a lovely monument to a renowned man of fine arts. Jan Van Eyck was a great painter and an important representative of Early Northern Renaissance art. He was born in the early 14th century and was well travelled. His art influenced many others. His statue in the square bearing his name is quite nice and shows him holding a paintbrush. The square is not particularly huge but there are some cafes and restaurants around and a few other shops. Worth a stop if you are in the vicinity.

While we were walking about, we came upon this monument to an important historic figure in Belgium. Where a couple of streets come together, you can get a good look at it, but honestly, it is not memorable, and the city has many other areas that are more pretty.

Statue of a prominent painter with a paint brush in one hand and a picture in another. The statue is in the center of the square which is at the old harbour. You will find interesting buildings surrounding the square area. The toll house is one of the most ornate.

Jan Van Eyck was a Belgian painter and perhaps his most famous work is "Man in a Red Turban".
This statue stands in the square that bears his name. The square itself is lovely and has some attractive buildings.

The statue is at the centre of a square also named after Van Eyck and it is the environs that are really good. Just stand there and look around at the buildings & canal and imagine how little has changed over the centuries !
