About
When in Bruges, there’s nothing like viewing this historic city from its canals. These affordable, 30-minute boat tours follow the same routes and offer commentary in several languages. But because they’re incredibly popular with visitors, don’t be surprised by long waits in line.

A canal trip is a must do on a trip to Bruges! They leave from several places and are 30-35 minutes long. It’s not cheap (€12 an adult at the time of writing) but it does give you a unique view of the town and helped us to get a feel for where everything was. The driver / guide was also very amusing so you learn some fun facts too!

Caught the paddle boat at Damme for the trip back to Bruges. Pleased to get a senior discount bringing the price to €9 for a single journey. Upper deck best when weather is fine or the bar room beneath when raining or too hot. Bar room very comfortable with good window views, and reasonably priced drinks. A very relaxing journey taking in some delightful scenery. Itshould be pointed out, however, that the Bruges terminus is a fairly long walk back into the city centre.

Absolutely stunning, a fantastic boat ride seeped in history, the beautiful churches dotted all around and the history behind them all related to you from the boat operator, the quaint little houses and waterside bars and cafes, it’s truly stunning. Brides is beautiful and would highly recommend a boat trip should you visit. This was the highlight of my trip and an opportunity to take some fantastic photographs.

Very easy tour and connection to Damme and Bruges. When coming from Damme and arriving in Bruges you can walk to the center but can also take a taxi. Very economic price and convenient. Ask the skipper to call, a very good service. You can also have drinks and small snacks on board

We enjoyed this canal cruise though it was a 20 minute wait for our boat. The guide was very informative and she was funny.
You get to see places that cannot be seen from land b/c the canals were the main mode of transportation back then.
Highly recommend

We have been to the city previously, but did not (I can't remember why not) take the time to get on the canals. We have now rectifyied that big mistake. You can see so much more of the city and the structures from the small boats. I would put this as the first thing to do when you arrive in the city. There are boat ride options all over the city. I have no way of determine which is the best one--just take one!
The tour will be half in English. Keep your camera at the ready--it is challenging to get great beauty shots.
The last photo in this stack is very funny! It was on the back doors of a van.

This is a great way to spend an afternoon when staying in Bruges. The boat is a bit hard to find, as it docks on a street a bit out of the way, but by asking at the hotel or using a map, you can find it well enough. We rode bikes out to the Quay from the old town, took the boat trip out to Damme, and rode the bikes back. The staff on the boat were extremely friendly and helpful, showing us where to go to get to the path that runs along side of the canal. The canal is beautiful with a lot of wildlife. The parallel-running path is level and an easy return walk or bike ride.

We set off on hotel bikes to ride alongside the canal from Bruges to Sluis in Holland, about 13 km each way. We stopped for coffee and a walk around the pretty village of Damme then set off again on the dedicated smooth flat bike track to Sluis. We stopped for a lovely lunch at restaurant Populierenhof which was very popular for Sunday lunch. We wandered around the town in the sunshine before setting off back to Bruges. The views across the fields were stunning with geese and ducks on canal and fields.

From the "canales", the city is just as enchanting. It is another perspective, and worth the time and money.

The return trip on the ‘Lamme Goedzak’ from Bruges to Damme is well worth the €10. It takes about 30/35 minutes each way, just enough time to sample one of the beers aboard including the beer that goes by the same name as the boat.
Damme itself is very pretty but apart from a few shops, a museum, a church, some bars and restaurants there is not a lot to see or do. So the couple of hours it takes for the boat to go to Bruges and back again to pick you up, are just enough to see the village and have a drink in one of the bars. In fact would recommend Café Sint-Pietershoeve where they serve the most delicious waffles.

We did a day tour to Bruges by Viator - there was no cycling involved, the canal cruise was just through the town , about 45 minutes - gave a different look at this gorgeous place. It was a lovely day -we left from Paris, early morning - up through Provence and plenty of time for lunch and shopping in Bruges. Would recommend it to anyone.

Do the canal boats run in mid-February?
Written January 2, 2015
Having had a look at the paperwork which we picked up on our trip on the canal, the paddle steamer only operates from the 1st April to 30th September. These are the dates for 2015.
