This is an iconic large statue directly next to St Bravo's Cathedral. The architect did a great job with it, as it almost comes to life the longer you look at it.

On the way to the cathedral
Jul 2020
In view of the World Exhibition of 1913 in Ghent a monument to the brothers Hubert and Jan Van Eyck was commissioned to architect Valentin Vaerwyck and sculptor Geo Verbanck. No matter how much we liked the famous medieval altarpiece housed at Saint Bavo’s Cathedral we couldn’t warm to this oversized tribute to the artists who painted it. Sitting stiffly on a throne at the top of some steps, the Van Eyck brothers look more like rulers than like artists, despite the depicted tools of their trade. They seem to snub the underlings of all ages honouring them with garlands. We found the two flanking groups of sparsely clad or naked figures in theatrical poses too heavy and almost comical. The large angel at the back, representing the Genius of Painting, is just too much.

Why this touristic site in Belgium - a Dutch, French and German speaking country - would be listed in Tripadvisor in Spanish is a complete mystery.

Large statue beside the Cathedral
Oct 2019 • Couples
This is a fairly large statue of these important people, in a triangular area to the side of the Cathedral so can easily be visited. Building work to the Cathedral is around this area so it is temporarily less tranquil than it should be. When the work is complete it will once again be a pleasant place to spend a short time.

Don' t see the importance of this statue although I love their paintings.
Jun 2018 • Couples
The statue itself is to big for the place. The two brothers made one of the most important paintings of religious art. And became more famous because of the germans who stole their work and the famous unknown thief of the 'judges" It's more interesting to have a visit to the restoration of "the Mystic lamb" or "L'agneau Mystique" " Het lam Gods" in Dutch the this statue of the painters.

Worth a stop if you happen by it

While pretty, it is only worth a stop if you happen by it. I saw nothing special about it. It's right by St. Bavos cathedral.

Giant statue of the lads in their pomp
Sep 2017 • Couples
This large, impressive statue of the van Eyck brothers was made in 1913 for the Ghent Expo. It seems only reasonable that they should be so recognised given the contribution their famous polyptych has made to the pride of the city, not to mention to tourism. Some of the flanking figures seem a little extraneous but all in all it's a nicely balanced composition, backed of course by St Bavo's. Definitely a great photo opportunity. It's surprisingly easy to miss. We must have been in the square in front of the cathedral four or five times before we realised this statue was in a quieter area at the rear. Worth finding.
