Really nice area of the city

The architecture is so beautiful along this waterway, and there are also restaurants with great water views. You can walk on either side as well as take a boat cruise.

Not just known for cranes anymore
Aug 2019
Kraanlei translates to cranes and this area is famous because of the wooden cranes that were everywhere along the Leie river. Today it is more famous for restaurants and shops and people taking pictures. Ghent was a major trading location and the river was used ship goods, thus the cranes nearby to the cloth trading center.

Gorgeous Part of Ghent
Sep 2019
The Kraanlei, named after the wooden cranes along the Leie River in the 16th Century, this area of Ghent is a beautiful place to stroll along the water, look into shops, stop for a bite, and/or just enjoy the gorgeous urban Flemish landscape.

Essential Ghent
Nov 2019
Ghent city is just full of beautiful historic buildings. Kraanlei is another of the old historic quaies along the River Lei it starts off as an ordinary street but opens out onto the riverside . If you continue along it you will arrive at Gravensteen. Along the way there are cafes ,quaint shops all housed in ornate buildings.
We approached it accidentally, as my wife had wanted to visit Vrijdagmarkt in the daylight ,we had been there the night before and illuminated it looked interesting. We were following the directions to get to Gravensteen, having crossed the river we turned left and follwed the road which had the House of Alijn onthe right before opening out into the lovely quayside.

Fabulous buildings
Oct 2019 • Couples
A real highlight of the historic core of the city with elaborate gables and frontages on many of the buildings here. Some of the most attractive buildings are found here, a delightful place to walk around and enjoy.

It is like a time warp as you wander this old area. Along the way do stop into Temermann Candy shop - it is lost it time somewhere back in the 18th century with shelves filled with treats.
