My favorite place in Ghent
Aug 2021 • Couples
Stopped here by accident, wrong location. Only about eight seats in this bar, and there was only one person in there sitting in a recliner. I thought about turning around and leaving but decided to sit down and see if the bartender showed up. The place had a certain charm even though it was definitely not a fancy place. After we sat down the owner Pols got up from the chair and went to the bar. We learned this was a sipping shot bar. Pols had lots of yummy concoctions that he had made and filled a large Dixie type cup to the absolute rim of the glass. These shots were like $4 or $5 euros each. We learned he had been in business for 37 years and he was quite the character. His picture is even on the outside of the building. After we had our drinks people started coming in and it became this place were everyone greeted everyone and we all talked like old friends. There was seating outside but you would totally miss the charm of this place by sitting out there by the canal. We were a family of five with three adult children and stayed for two drinks. We were in Ghent for 3 nights and each night ended up stopping by here to start our night off. We met so many interested people and even ended up drinking the night away with a couple young men we met there. Last night we took lots of pictures with Pols and left as old friends. Ghent would not have been the same for us without this quirky little bar. Highly recommend to anyone that wants to feel like they are family. Will have fond memories of Pols for years to come.

Purely for drinking Jenever, not a great place to hang out
Feb 2020
Small place to get a Jenever. As Jenever lovers, we off course had to try this place. We bought an old Jenever and a flavoured one (passion fruit). The old Jenever was good and full of flavour. Bit different from the Dutch ones. The passion fruit was hardly a Jenever. I could hardly taste the Jenever or even alcohol. But it still tasted good.
Poured all the way to the edge of the glass (as it should be) and pretty cheap. But the place itself is very small and cold (in the winter). And not really a nice place to hang around to enjoy the drink. Too bad..

If in Ghent .....you HAVE to visit here!
Dec 2019
Tiniest bar I’ve ever been too with the biggest atmosphere. Serving Gin shots of every flavor imaginable. Locals very friendly and a must-do if you visit Ghent. Great fun!

Too small
Oct 2019 • Couples
Sometimes I cannot understand some critics. Supposed to be best bar in Gent... We are talking about a pub 3*5m ... Most people outside rather inside. Men mostly. Might be best bar because is one of a few that plays music... I might be a weirdo.

Mix with locals and tourists

Small place, fab music with a great atmosphere. A place to pop into not to stay the whole night but we'll worth it.
Great range and variety of flavours. Be aware however as its home brewed your flavour may have run out and is still in the process of being made. All part of the fun really.

Genever to "spice" things up..
Jul 2019
't Dreupelkot was definitely one of the most unique places I've been to bar-wise. They only serve genever and there are I think more than 100 options on the menu. Since it is a type of gin found and served mostly in the Netherlands and Belgium, it's a one of a kind local experience. The Ghent student who we were with that day recommended we try the pepper genever (made of chili pepper) and although, naturally, my tongue burnt for a solid 5 minutes, an experience it was! Genever is served in a huge shot glass, so that you can drink it slowly and enjoy. BUT, if you get the pepper option and are bar-hopping, I recommend you drink it as a shot in one gulp to feel the burn! Don't skip this place..it is a must-visit! (I only rated 4 stars since there is limited seating space inside)

THE Place for Friends to Meet
Oct 2018 • Friends
A fun place to wrap up an evening out for dinner with friends. One of the great bars still going strong. Skip desert and take a walk to visit this place. It won't be here for ever! And the walk will do you good too!

Super friendly staff and locals, and delicious schnapps and spirits. Kris/Chris was the barman, and he was so, so welcoming and very funny! He was very helpful in helping us figure out what to order, based on what we told him we liked. We would go back again and again!

Gin
Dec 2018 • Couples
What is not to like. So many gins. So little time.

They are well priced €2.50 each. Mostly. And plenty to sample. They were on the sweet side but that didn't stop me.

I would go back.
