About
Vooruit is a vibrant live performing arts center located in a 100 years old monument in the heart of Ghent. Since 1982, we have been offering countless cultural events like concerts, podium performances, parties, book presentations, debates... Vooruit is a significant meeting place for a very diverse public. Contributing to this is our popular Cafe with patio, where anyone can come enjoy a (vegetarian) meal or drink, meet for a chat, or catch up on some work.

"The Vooruit" is a historic building with a visible past, clearly integrated in today's hustle. It is hardly ever empty, and you'll find all types of visitors here; young and old, groups, families and solitary wanderers, writers, students, thinkers, artists, ... All of us grateful for the inspiration the walls provide.

The building has various different rooms that are used for expos, concerts or performances, and each of them still portrays a proud representation of this building's past.

To me, this place holds wonderful memories of long philosophic conversations over cold beers. I still love going there, downstairs on rainy days or on cold nights, and on the roof terrace on summer evenings. The staff also participate in the concept of buying "a delayed coffee / soup", meaning you can, if you want to, buy a coffee for a person who might otherwise not have the luxury to enjoy one... A concept as heartfelt as the place itself.

The only thing I have to admit this place doesn't really live up to, is the food. It's quite expensive and I'm not sure if it is worth the money. But in terms of ambiance and inspiration, this place is truly worth the visit!

Happened upon this place while strolling the neighbourhood. A great cafe with a cool terrace and looks like a great music venue. Yummy and fresh made sandwiches - I had the ricotta/Parmesan/olive while my husband had the guacamole focaccia. Both came with a tasty and crunchy salad on the side. Great range of drinks, loads of seating, indoor pétanque court. Also tip for other parents out there: lots of room for your stroller and the WC downstairs has a baby changing table in the ladies' disabled washroom (hallelujah).

De Vooruit like we call it in Ghent, is a place where you will see people from all intellectual levels. Students, workers, Lawyers, Artists and many others. You can eat a good Spaghetti or a vegetarian dish together with good local beer. De Vooruit in Ghent is organizing every year a lot of cultural events. Concerts, symposia, exhibitions and many others. Surely a good place to rest and enjoy social life.

This wasn't on my list of things to see but I passed it when visiting elsewhere. It does not look the same as the photos on here as the two side steeples don't seem to be as high as in the photo. As a building I found it looked ordinary and didn't even bother to take any pictures of it. However, if you are going here to go inside for any reason your view may be completely different.

We hope that the Centre will come to life again when the students return to the city because this last weekend in August, it was a Ghost Town -- tired and dusty, no one there, nothing open. We appreciate the special architecture and the interesting neighbourhood but we presume everyone was on holiday on the final weekend of August because there was no one around at dinnertime on Saturday night. We can only recommend it as a curiosity - a step back in time...

We read and were told that you had not been to Ghent unless you had been here. We first went (on Sunday early evening) just for a beer and peek, hoping to find the fabled terrace. Beer (their own white) was good and cheap. Large cafe space with diners outnumbered by people (mostly students with laptops) taking advantage of free wifi and conviviality!
Second time was in the day, two good beers again, splendid loos, and found the terrace, although quite a cold day it was away from the tapping on laptops and clanking of cutlery. We two were the only ones who braved it finding some sun and warmth against the main building. No view of the river as I thought had been described. A hanging garden from rooms above added interest.

Within the cafe at the back is a sweep of stairs (blocked by plants on the Sunday) which (on Monday lunch) led to a mezzanine quiter dining area, for those in the know, away from the hubbub! Lovely Art Deco roof and decoration, leading to the theatre I think.

Next to this was a first floor cafe area with people in it but inaccessible to us, maybe staff only?

Overall worth the detour. No food sampled although nothing spectacular on the menu but people were tucking in for lunch.

There was a branch of Amadeus opposite for those with more meaty desires!

Terrace looks promising. This is where they get our 2 points...
Bar is self-service, also for food. Staff not very welcoming.
The spaghetti we had was nothing to write home about. Precooked stuff, probably just heated in a microwave. Well, heated is not really correct, as it was lukewarm.
Lots of vegetables in the sauce, but it all tasted bland and unpleasant. Big pieces of meat, almost raw in the middle.
Unfortunately, they won't see us again, lots of better choices available.

Visited the cafeteria in the Vooruit Art Centre on my visit to Ghent. It was huge with lots of people, very relaxed, historic atmosphere. I had some soup, and it was very good. Spent an hour just relaxing with a friend, drinking soup and being on the wifi. Great place to spend an afternoon with friends, family or alone.

Vooruit is the place to be in Ghent. It's Ghents most famous cultural spot, where you can enjoy good food made by the best chef with local ingredients, art, concerts, dance events and there's even place for performances, theathre and much more. The building itself is amazing..The bar sometimes reminds me of bars in Paris. De vooruit is not to be missed whenever you visit Ghent.
