I am a great believer that we should have buildings that represent the period it was built in, the book towers only positive is that it does that in spades. Let's hope the work being carried out will improve it a little.

This building towers above the city (together with the cathedral). The university library is located in this building by architect Vande Velde. When open it is worth a visit but it's not one of the main attractions in Gent.

This is a beautiful building that sets the skyline of Gent. From the tower you get a great view but it's not always accessible. You can get into the library downstairs which is a very enjoyable space. The tower itself needs repair urgently.

Ghent is a city full of church towers. But thanks to master architect Henry van de Velde, there's one exception. He designed a tower of wisdom (or science), placed it on top of the Blandijnberg and since the late thirties, it overlooks the university zone and the historical center. The exterior is brutal and rude. Pure concrete with rounded corners.... More

The building is tall but not very pretty. Inside is a large library. Not sure what the point is, unless you are doing some research that requires access to those books.

Although it's neglected by lack of funds it's still a great landmark created by genious architect Henri Van De Velde.

Impressive masterpiece of Henry Van de Velde, de "boekentower" towers over the student quarter of ghent. After restauration it will be possible to visit the "Belvedere" with its magnificent views of the city. The restauration will take several more years though.

Off the beaten path. The Ghent Book Tower looked at first sight quite ugly. Pure concrete, no ornaments and lots of wet spots on it's facade because of the absorption of Belgian rain. But when we climbed the stairs we entered another world. All kinds of marbles, exotic woods and some original 1940's furniture and desks. The catalog room with... More
