The "central" square of Ghent, in the continuous traffic of trams, bicycles and pedestrians (inevitable, given that it is the crossroads of any journey aiming towards the historic area of the most beautiful city in Flanders) is not its most beautiful, without the harmonies of the houses surrounding the Vrijdagsmarkt, or the most intimate unit of the cathedral square. But it is still, undoubtedly, very beautiful, majestic as perhaps no other place in Belgium can be with the view it offers of the "three towers" of Gandavia (the best view, however, is from the very nearby San Michele bridge) and the fulcrum of the only system of "three squares" of the center. In a city that still at times resists mass tourism, only here you will find an anthology of local and non-local fast food chains, but among the chocolate shops there is also some good (and in any case, when there are not too many tourists, it remains a great place to eat in the center at not exaggerated prices). The Christmas markets are very rich

Downtown Ghent is full of small squares and this is a larger one in the historic city center. Korenmarkt is full of Golden Ages guildhalls and close to the Belgian city's picturesque canal. Do spend some time here.

This central area is sort of the Times Square of Ghent with some inexpensive basic restaurants and tourist gift shops. But it is also adjacent to some of the most impressive historic buildings. All the trams seem to pass this plaza and you will surely come here. Not sure how long you will want to linger, as there are more charming areas just a minute away.

We visited in December to frequent the Christmas Markets located broadly across this central square area. It was huge and had a wide range of food stuffs/attractions and entertainment. The selection of beers and food was impressive and of good quality. Slightly expensive, as you can imagine, but a great visit and highly recommended.

You can also enter the historic buildings and go up the tower for a great view of Gent.

Almost 1,000 years ago, grain imported via the Scheldt and Leie was traded here and the Korenmarkt grew into a center of activity during the Middle Ages. Later the stagecoaches also came here, so that at the beginning of the 20th century the impressive postal building was built on the foundations of what was originally to become the Royal Dutch Theater.
Now there are mainly shops and eateries and there are enormous crowds because of the trams and buses that stop here. There is currently also the Christmas market with lots of food and a Ferris wheel.

One of the most picturesque parts of town and in the very center. Lots of historic buildings are here, so you will want to linger. Most of the tram lines pass through here, and a lot of the area is pedestrian. Lots of restaurants, many of them catering to the tourist crowd.

Had a walk round here as it I believe the main square in Ghent.
It certainly didn’t disappoint as the architecture is stunning. There are also numerous places to eat and drink if you want. Weather was a bit against us but it was certainly worth the effort. Definitely recommend and would love to visit again.

This area is pretty much your starting point if you want to visit Ghent's City Centre; on one side you'll find the main shopping street, on the other side you'll be heading for the more Medieval core of the city, with its "Gravensteen", "Vleeshuis" and "Patershol". Behind the old postal building you'll have a great view of the city and you can take (highly recommended) boat tours.

The buildings are exquisite and you can tell how much it means to the inhabitants to stay close to its past, whilst incorporating modern-day life as well. You'll also find some nice places to eat (though I'd recommend walking just a little bit ahead for cheaper and often better places).

Just take tram 1 from anyplace towards "Korenmarkt", and you are ready to explore the city!

The iconic towers of the buildings along the main street of the Korenmarkt are a spectacle and the vast choice available in the local businesses means that there will be something for everyone to enjoy here.
